FORT WAYNE â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s freshmen and sophomores on the boys track team competed in the Concordia Relays Saturday.
The distance medley team of Braden Lecklider, Joseph Lude, Davie Fulk and Andrew McFarland placed second. The 1,600-meter relay squad of Lude, Ryan Mosher, T.J. Yagel and Kaleb Greenwood came in fifth.
Michael Simmons also took fifth in the shot put. the 800-meter relay team of Greenwood, Lecklider, Michael Wyrick and Kohltin Green came in sixth.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s girls softball team took a 10-run win over a Northeast Hoosier Conference opponent Monday at Morsches Park.
The Lady Eagles posted a seven-run fifth inning to take the 15-5 win over Norwell.
â€śWe needed a game like that,â€ť Columbia City Head Coach Steve Cox said. â€śIt was fun.â€ť
The Lady Eagles had an 8-5 advantage going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Saturday dawned cold and damp, and the Whitko softball team had trouble warming up against the visiting Heritage Lady Patriots.
After working out of a first inning jam, the Lady Wildcats gave up seven runs in the top of the third inning. Despite a late-game effort the Lady Wildcats fell in a non-conference matchup by an 11-2 score.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, the Lady Patriots strung together two singles and a walk to load the bases against the home standing Lady Wildcats.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s girls tennis team split two matches this weekend, beating Peru and falling to Mishawaka Marion.
The Lady Eagles took a strong 4-1 advantage over Peru, dropping their only loss in the No. 2 singles match.
Celine Rongos won the No. 1 singles match in straight sets. In No. 3 singles, Adriana Brown took a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The No. 1 doubles pair of Macie Hinen and Sydney Ford took a 6-0, 6-2 win. Alaina Beckner and Breanna Hicks won the No. 2 doubles match by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Whitkoâ€™s junior varsity baseball squad took both ends of a double-header Saturday, defeating John Adams 9-4 in game one and 10-0 in game two.
In the opener, pitcher Reed Brace earned the win with four innings of relief.
Brace didnâ€™t give up an earned run, while striking out three.
Riley Anderson went 2-for-4 from the plate with a double and an RBI, and Brady Weeks added a double and two RBIs.
The Wildcats posted strong third and fifth innings, scoring three runs apiece, to take a strong lead going into the final innings, when John Adams went on a run of its own.
LEO-CEDARVILLE Ââ€” After Saturdayâ€™s invitational, Columbia City freshman Tyler Green is the Eaglesâ€™ third linkster to join the medalist list at the Leo Invite.
Green joins Mike Schumaker (1997-99) and Tyler Gay (2003-04) by taking top honors in the 16-year-old event.
Greenâ€™s 73 was the top score at Cedar Creek â€” a par 71 course â€” and the Eagles came in fourth as a team.
GARRETT â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s baseball team outscored Garrett 18-7 combined in a double-header Saturday. Yet, the Eagles yet took a game and gave up the other to the Railroaders.
The morning game was the Ryan Kerschner show, both at the plate and on the mound. Columbia City won decisively 12-0 as Kerschner threw a two-hit shutout from the mound and hit his fourth home run of the season.
He struck out seven Railroaders and gave up one walk and one hit-by-pitch.
INDIANAPOLIS â€” Softball sectional brackets were released Thursday morning by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.
Teams from each of the three Whitley County high schools will be traveling to various parts of Northeast Indiana for the first round of sectional play.
In Class 4A, Columbia City will compete in Sectional 5 at DeKalb. The Lady Eaglesâ€™ first-round opponent will be Carroll. Their game will be Monday, May 20 at 6 p.m.
Columbia City lost earlier this season on Carroll 7-0.
The winner will play East Noble, which has a first-round bye.
NORTH MANCHESTER â€” Whitkoâ€™s boys golf team took second in a three-way meet at Sycamore Thursday.
The Wildcats shot 172 as a team. Wabash scored 164 to win the meet. Lakeland Christian Academy had a score of 184.
Daniel Zawlocki led the Whitko boys with a score of 40. That put him three strokes behind Wabashâ€™s Jordan Blair, who had the meetâ€™s top score at 37.
Following Zawlocki, Cole Bechtold got 42 for the Wildcats. Will Peters shot 43, Colton LeTourneau turned in a 47 and Cole Findley finished off the Whitko scoring with a 61.
CHURUBUSCO â€” On a senior night punctuated by raindrops and emotional tributes to five senior ball players, the Churubusco Lady Eagle softball team weathered a rocky start and dug themselves out of a 3-0 hole, going on to post a 12-4 Northeast Corner Conference win over visiting Westview on Thursday night.
