CHURUBUSCO — The battle for Whitley County high school volleyball supremacy entered its initial phase Tuesday evening as the Whitko Lady Wildcats traveled up Ind. 205 to take on the host, the Churubusco Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles ran the table on the visiting Lady Wildcats as they took the Varsity, JV and C-team matches, ending all in straight set wins.
’Busco took the varsity match by a 25-25,25-16, 25-18 count. Churubusco took the JV match by a 25-20, 25-11 count, and the C-team contest by a 25-22, 25-19 score.
SOUTH WHITLEY — First-game miscues led Whitko to a season-opening loss to Wawasee Friday night in South Whitley.
Despite possessing the ball twice as long as the Warriors in the first half, turnovers and penalties kept the Wildcats from the end zone, while Wawasee pulled out to a 14-0 halftime lead.
“It was just the little things,” Whitko Head Coach Wayne Swender said. “We counted nine little things in the first half that didn’t go our way. We were moving the ball really well in the first half and all-in-all we were happy defensively.”
Whitko hosts Columbia City next Friday.
COLUMBIA CITY — Sometimes football games come down to one team being able to do just enough of what they need to win.
In the season opener at Max Gandy Athletic Field, it was the visiting Warsaw Tigers, who were able to get just enough from their workhorse running back, who handed the Columbia City Eagles a 20-14 loss Friday night.
“I think its very simple; — Warsaw did what they needed to win the game and we did not,” Columbia City Head Coach Randy Hudgins said. “Warsaw won and we lost, and its because we didn’t make the plays when we needed to make them.”
CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s football team got off to a strong start Friday night, beating Fremont 46-13.
The game started off with a touchdown in the first quarter by senior Jason Nicodemus within the first minute and Churubusco continued to prevail the rest of the game.
Following Nicodemus’s lead, ’Busco had two more touchdowns by the end of the first quarter, scored respectively by seniors, Jay Petrie and Cory Miller.
COLUMBIA CITY — Following a season opening tie against Manchester Monday, Columbia City’s Lady Eagle soccer team picked up its first win of the year Thursday evening, as senior midfielder Haley Boner led the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 win over the visiting Garrett Lady Railroaders.
The Lady Eagles made a rush at the Garrett goal, drawing the keeper out.
The ball squirted free rolling behind the defense and Boner drove the ball into the open net to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead with 35:49 left in the first half. Boner’s goal would prove to be the only one of the half.
SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys soccer team played its first game on the high school field Thursday night, hosting county-rival Columbia City.
Wildcat Daniel Kirkham knocked in a goal in the first four minutes to take a 1-0 lead over the Eagles.
“We definitely started off good,” Whitko Head Coach Jason Ehrman said.
But with only 12 guys able to play, the Wildcats quickly began to run out of steam, and Columbia City took over the game.
“We’ve tried to condition and not wear down, but it’s tough,” Ehrman said. “They’ve got a lot of heart. They hustled and tried hard.”
COLUMBIA CITY — Churubusco’s and Columbia City’s tennis team’s opened their season’s with an intra-county match Tuesday night at DeVol Field in Columbia City.
The host team took a lopsided 5-0 win, despite a close No. 1 doubles match.
Columbia City’s No. 1 doubles team of Mason Coverstone and Blake Fearnow won the first game, 6-4, but Churubusco’s Brandon Wormcastle and Landon Pearson battled back to win the second game 6-3.

The Lady Eagles beat Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Bellmont by one stroke, 194-195.
Jackie Leeuw and Jessica Klemm tied for match medalist for the Lady Eagles, both firing a 46.
Sydney Fort wasn’t far behind, scoring a 48. Allison and Bethany Yoder both shot a 51.

CHURUBUSCO — The Churubusco Lady Eagle volleyball team opened a new season, hosting the Leo Lady Lions in Tuesday night’s non-conference match up.
The Lady Eagles shook off first game jitters, but despite putting up an increasingly competitive fight as the evening went on, the host fell in three games 25-13, 25-19 and 27-25 to open the season.
Area football teams had the opportunity to face competition Friday night with scrimmages.
