Churubusco honors seniors; Beats South Adams

CHURUBUSCO — The Churubusco Lady Eagles basketball team honored its seniors in prime fashion Thursday night with a 49-23 win over South Adams.

Churubusco Head Coach Jamie Perlich said seniors Heather Monk, Haliegh Gross and Morgan Young have all made powerful contributions in their four years with the Lady Eagles.

Monk led ’Busco in scoring with 12 and Gross chipped in nine points of her own.

“It was nice to see the three seniors, on their special night, step up and play a great game,” Perlich said.

CC Park Dept. gears up for 2012 softball season

COLUMBIA CITY — It’s the end of January, but Keith Nickolson is ready for softball season.

“I’m dreaming of the sound of the crack of the bats and the smell of the dirt,” said Nickolson.

He and the other Columbia City Parks Department Girls Softball board are gearing up for 4,000 people to be at Morsches Park on opening day, May 5.
Though it may seem like a long way away, registration begins Feb. 1 and runs through March 17.

Maggard, Kreigers pummel Whitko

FORT WAYNE — Led by Head Coach Scott Kreiger and his father, Wayne Kreiger, former long-time Columbia City head coach as his assistant, Tuesday night’s match-up between Canterbury and Whitko was different than just the average game.

Wayne Kreiger spent 33 years as a CCHS Lady Eagle head coach – 33 years of experience against rival Whitko. Along with the Kreigers is freshman Darby Maggard, who transferred to Canterbury this season from Whitko.

Col. City girls fall to Northrop on senior night

COLUMBIA CITY — Free throws represent just that, an opportunity to score free points with the clock stopped and nobody’s hand in your face.
Failure to convert a high percentage of free throws usually spells doom for a team trying to play catch up.

That was the case for the Columbia City Lady Eagles as cold shooting from the free throw line and a physical inside game from the Northrop Lady Bruins gave Columbia City a 66-58 loss on senior night at the Donald S. Weeks gymnasium.

CC's Leah Eber tabbed Big Ten Co-Field Athlete Of The Week

CHICAGO — Fifth-year senior Leah Eber earned the Big Ten Co-Field Athlete of the Week after her performance at the Gene Edmonds Cup against Indiana State over the weekend.

Eber won all three events in which she was entered and helped Purdue retain the cup for the 17th consecutive year. Eber started the day off by winning the long jump. She posted a mark of 6.25m, the second longest of her career and a meet record.

Eagles come in 6th at conference

KENDALLVILLE — At Saturday’s Northeast Hoosier Conference Tournament held at East Noble High School, a slow start by the Columbia City Eagles relegated them to a seventh-place finish.

Kyle Burns picked up the first win for the Eagles in the 138-pound weight class, downing Homestead’s Andy Papadakis to advance to the semifinals.

The other Eagle to pick up a win in the first round was junior Russell Hazelet in the 182-pound weight class. Hazelet, the third seed, picked up his first round win.

Lady ’Cats lose to Northfield

SOUTH WHITLEY — The Lady Wildcats basketball team came into Saturday looking for its third win in a row. Northfield was looking for its fourth victory in five tries.

Unfortunately for Whitko, the Lady Norse achieved their goal, mounting a double-digit comeback to beat the Lady Wildcats, 59-47.

Jordan Hall got Whitko on the board early with an inside basket before the Northfield hit four straight from the foul line to take a 4-2 lead.
The Lady Norse scored 4-of-8 shots from the line in the first quarter, stemming from six Lady Wildcat fouls.

DeKalb downs Lady Eagles

COLUMBIA CITY — The Lady Eagles basketball team tried but couldn’t keep up against visiting Northeast Hoosier Conference opponent DeKalb Lady Barons, losing 46-33.

The first quarter saw six lead changes and three ties.The Lady Eagles got scoring contributions from five different players in the opening period, with Emily Whitleather’s five points leading.

Columbia City got in foul trouble late in the first; DeKalb went 3-for-6 from the line and got a Rineheart jumper to end the quarter leading 14-12.

Whitko basketball defeats Southwood

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys basketball squad beat Three Rivers Conference foe Southwood Wednesday night, 70-59.

Seniors Logan Irwin and Alex Stoddard scored 19 points apiece to rally for the win in the second half.

The Wildcats trailed 19-13 at the end of the first quarter and 29-21 at halftime.

Whitko matched Southwood’s scoring in the third quarter at 17 with six points by Stoddard and two 3-pointers by Trey Weber.

Irwin and Stoddard caught fire in the fourth quarter, combining for 16 points in the final eight minutes to pull out the win.

Whitko girls beat Wawasee for first time in eight years

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s Lady Wildcat basketball team defeated Wawasee for the first time in eight years Tuesday night, 68-24.

The Lady Wildcats were 1-11 against the Lady Warriors in the last decade, including a nine-game losing streak.

Wawasee’s stand-out KiLee Kna-fel, who averages over 30 points-per-game, was held to just one point in the first half against Whitko and 12 for the game.

The Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and again held Wawasee to two points in the second, while adding nine points to their score.
