CHURUBUSCO ‚ÄĒ Fourteen, 1,057 and 24. What do these numbers mean?
Fourteen is the number of losses Churubusco’s boys basketball team suffered before winning its first game, an agonizing stretch for the Eagles and their fans.
The number 1,057 is the amount of points the 2011-12 Eagles scored. That team went 14-7.
MARION ‚ÄĒ Several local tracksters competed in Saturday‚Äôs Indiana State Indoor Track finals at Indiana Wesleyan.
Leading the area’s athletes were Austin McClure and Connor Stouder.
McClure, of Churubusco, took first in the shotput in the small school division. His teammate, Eric Kuznar, placed 16th in the same event.
Stouder, of Whitko, was state runner up in the 55-meter dash.
Churubusco’s Cory Miller came in eighth in the pole vault, and Whitko’s 1,600-meter relay team placed ninth.
’Busco’s Connor Hogeston finished 10th in the 3,200-meter run.
SOUTH WHITLEY ‚ÄĒ Whitko‚Äôs baseball team returns a solid core of players and will be taking on some of the best competition in the state.
The Wildcats are in the same Class 3A sectional as Bellmont, which went to the semistate game a year ago. In the Three Rivers Conference, Northfield was the Class 2A state champion from last year.
‚ÄúWe‚Äôre not the favorite on paper,‚ÄĚ said Whitko coach Erik Hisner. ‚ÄúBut we like what we see and are setting some goals going forward.‚ÄĚ
COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ Saturday will be the final day residents can register for the summer softball season.

SOUTH WHITLEY ‚ÄĒ Whitko‚Äôs boys track team comes off a successful campaign last year looking to continue a string of Three Rivers Conference championships that stretches back to 2008.
The Wildcats will need to replace a backbone of seniors from last year’s team that finished with a 9-1 record.
CHURUBUSCO ‚ÄĒ Having two of three senior players miss time due to injuries would make for a rough season for just about any team.
That’s what happened to Churubusco’s girls basketball team during its 2012-13 season, as the Lady Eagles finished the year 3-18.
Savannah Labenz had returned for her senior season to start at point guard for the Lady Eagles. Unfortunately, her high school finale was cut short by a torn labrum suffered shortly before Christmas that caused her to miss the remainder of the season.
SOUTH WHITLEY ‚ÄĒ The end is better than the beginning.
That statement was certainly true for Whitko’s boys basketball team in the 2012-13 season. The Wildcats, under first-year head coach Scott Wessel, finished with a record of 6-16. However, Whitko ended its season playing its best basketball of the year and was able to avenge an early-season defeat in the sectional tournament.
‚ÄúWe ended the year the way you want to be playing,‚ÄĚ Wessel said.
Whitko was 4-4 in the final weeks of the season, claiming close wins over conference foes in the process.

HUNTERTOWN ‚ÄĒ Puzzled. Frustrated. Confused. Melancholy. Dumbfounded.
That’s how many fans felt in the final seconds of Columbia City’s last game of the season against DeKalb.
A week after the blow, many Eagle followers are still scratching their heads ‚ÄĒ what happened?
The Eagles suffered a difficult, one-point loss to the Barons in the sectional semifinal last Friday after an extremely rare call by the referees in the last 2.5 seconds ‚ÄĒ a ‚Äúblarge.‚ÄĚ
A blarge is a slang term used by officials, when a block and charge are called at the same time.
COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ The 2012-13 wrestling season wrapped up with one Whitley County wrestler advancing to the IHSAA State Individual Tournament finals at Banker‚Äôs Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and for the three Whitley County Schools the past season is one where each saw certain measures of success.
