   There were a lot of unknowns when Whitko’s distance team came into the track and field season.
   Not knowing what they truly had on their hands, the Wildcat foursome of Brian Menzie, Jude Stieglitz, Brody Wilson and Trapper Mize began to see signs of something special.

Kyle 2K11: ’Busco’s dynamic duo takes final run

   When Churubusco lore looks back on 2011, the success of boys’ track and field will begin with possibly the best the program has ever seen.
   Two Eagle seniors have cemented their place in ’Busco athletics to the point where people simply ask, Monk or Mathewson?
   Not only bearing the same first name, the two Kyles have been side-by-side in what has been four years of rewriting the record books at Churubusco.

Lady Eagles upset No. 2 Mishawaka Marian

   COLUMBIA CITY — In a matter of two nights, Columbia City softball went from just another season to its best since 1997.
   After claiming the class 3A sectional Monday, the Lady Eagles returned to Morsches Park to add another title to its season.
   Regional champion.
   Behind the brute power of its offensive lineup and shutdown pitching, Columbia City upset No. 2 Mishawaka Marian 8-3.

Eagles tame Cougars in regular season finale

   COLUMBIA CITY — The East Noble boys’ golf sectional awaits Columbia City Friday, but before the Eagles head into the postseason, one final home match had them squaring off against Central Noble.
   The front nine at Eagle Glen Golf Course played host to the Cougars. Central Noble took the low individual round of the night but Columbia City ended the regular season with a win 169-193.

Lady Eagles polish off Lakers for sectional title

   COLUMBIA CITY — After five rain delays the wait was worth it for the Columbia City Lady Eagles.
   A week after they were supposed to open the class 3A sectional at Morsches Park, the Lady Eagles capped it off beating Lakeland 6-0 for a 7 p.m. regional date at home against Mishawaka Marian today.

Eagles win battle of rivals, lose title war

   SOUTH WHITLEY — The Columbia City Eagles experienced the good and the bad of the baseball postseason Monday.
   Heavy rainfall forced several delays to the Tippecanoe Valley class 3A baseball sectional, and in the end, a move to the Whitko High School diamond.
   The day ended with Columbia City on the losing end of an 8-4 championship game against NorthWood.    However, the Eagles remained alive long enough to end county rival Whitko’s season.

Blazers’ grand slam bumps Churubusco

   GARRETT — Churubusco was firmly in the driver’s seat through three innings of the class 2A semifinal sectional round Saturday.
   Leading 5-1, the Eagles looked to be on their way to the sectional championship.
   However, Eastside used a grand slam to score six unanswered runs and rally back to end ’Busco’s season 7-5.

Turn-n-burn: ’Busco back at state

   FORT WAYNE — Churubusco senior Kyle Mathewson was hot at Friday night’s Wayne boys’ track and field regional.
   Literally.
   Coming off the track with a hole in his shoe, Mathewson took a turn and burned down the last 100 meters of the 200-meter dash final to take second and earn his first state finals trip.
 

Lady Eagles bust open gates of sectional 18-1

   COLUMBIA CITY — Finally! After almost a week of rain delays, the Columbia City class 3A sectional softball tournament finally got underway Friday night at Morsches Park.
   For the Columbia City Lady Eagles, it seemed like they stored up almost a week’s worth of runs as they downed the West Noble Lady Chargers in the opening game 18-1 in five innings.
