A 45th anniversary tribute to Columbia City’s undefeated football team

October 26, 2011

In 1966, the No. 1 song on the charts was Strangers in the Night, by Frank Sinatra. John Wayne’s movie El Dorado was released, gas was $.28 a gallon and stamps were five cents apiece.
It was also the only year Columbia City posted a 9-0 undefeated football team.
Though there wasn’t a state tournament in 1966, the Eagles went 9-0 after nearly opposite results in 1965.

Whitko, Roush advance to state

October 24, 2011

FORT WAYNE — Whitko’s boys cross country team seemed a little out of place at the awards ceremony Saturday at New Haven’s semi-state meet.
Barefooted and surrounded by big-town schools like Mishawaka, Marion, South Bend St. Joseph, Carroll, Warsaw and Snider, the Wildcats took the podium for their first ever sixth-place finish, good enough for a trip to the state meet.
Taking the trip to Terre Haute with them will be Columbia City’s Samantha Roush, who placed second individually.

When people look in the record books it will just show that for the sixth year in a row, the Columbia City Eagle football team’s season ended at the hands of Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger 27-10.
What it won’t show is that this was a game that was in doubt late into the fourth quarter.
