NECC bout hands ’Busco first loss

   HUNTINGTON — The Columbia City wrestling team traveled south to Huntington North to take part in the 10 team Weston Close Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Huntington North High School Thursday. With scoring done on an individual basis, senior Justin Trigg led the Eagles to an eighth-place finish by placing third in the 140 pound weight class.

   COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagles used strong first and fourth quarters and a sterling performance from the free throw line to take the night cap of the NHC/ACAC Challenge winning 54-38    over a Garrett Lady Railroaders team that entered the day undefeated.

Championship doubleheader: Whitko teams advance to final of MC tourney

   DENVER — The holidays have been good to Whitko basketball. Thursday it has the chance to get even better.
   Wednesday, Whitko boys’ and girls’ basketball teams used a win in the first day of the Miami County Tournament to advance to the championship game.
   For the second time this season, the Lady Wildcats (6-6) used a lopsided victory over host North Miami.    After winning 72-31 on Dec. 4, Whitko beat the Lady Warriors 60-35 Wednesday.

Out with a bang: Eagles close out 2010 with 2-0 day

   COLUMBIA CITY — Heading into the holiday break, Columbia City boys’ basketball was reeling from its second loss of the season to Wawasee.
   During the break, the Eagles (6-2) left 2010 behind on a good note. Tuesday’s Columbia City Shoot-out had the host come away as one of two teams undefeated on the day at 2-0.

’Busco jersey auction main event at chili supper

   CHURUBUSCO — Hey, give five, five-five dollars, ten now twenty, sold.
   The bidding war is stirring back up for Churubusco baseball with its annual chili supper that provides Eagles family and fans to take home their own piece of the program’s history.
   The third installment of the annual feast takes place before the Jan. 7 Churubusco boys’ home basketball  game. Fans enjoy the taste of warm chili in the cold winter months while an auction takes place for a piece of ’Busco past baseball glory.

Whitko soccer off and running

   The Whitko athletic department grew a little bit in the past week.
   The once Whitko soccer club became an official sport at Whitko High School Dec. 20 thanks to a request from athletic director Rob Irwin to the Whitko Community Schools board.

Lady Eagles stun Cadets

   FORT WAYNE — Christmas came early for the Columbia City girls basketball team.
   The Lady Eagles broke their four-game losing streak on the road Wednesday night against Concordia (7-4), 62-55.
   “We’d been a slump in the last few games, this is a big win for us,” Columbia City Head Coach Amy Shearer said.
   With three players finishing the game in double digits, the Lady Eagles didn’t rely on one person to win the game.

’Cats smother Pilgrims 59-41

   SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s Wildcats had to turn up the pressure Wednesday night on non-conference foe Plymouth in order to put the varsity contest out of reach early en route to a decisive 59-41 win over the Pilgrims.
   It was a lesson learned from the team’s previous contest against Three Rivers Conference Tippecanoe Valley.
