GOSHEN â€” On the heels of the teamâ€™s first win, the Lady Eagles came into their first Northeast Corner Conference hoping to start out on top.
But Fairfieldâ€™s pressure was too much for Churubusco, forcing a 44-23 loss.
Churubusco didnâ€™t score until 4:30 ran off the clock in the first quarter with a set of free throws by Haleigh Gross.
â€™Buscoâ€™s scorers became more diverse in the second quarter, with baskets by Lacey Pulley, Heather Monk, Morgan Young and another pair of free throws by Gross.
Gross was 6-for-7 from the stripe in the first half.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Many fathers enjoy going out to the backyard and tossing around a baseball or going to the gym to shoot hoops.
But for Whitko Head Coach Rob Irwin and Columbia City Head Coach Chris Benedict, its drastically different.
Both Benedict and Irwin are coaching stand-out players â€” who also happen to be their sons.
While many players face the typical suggestions from their fathers, Drew Benedict and Logan Irwin get quite a bit more.

CHURUBUSCO â€” Following an emotional loss to Columbia City Friday night, Whitkoâ€™s girls basketball team responded with a win against the countyâ€™s other Lady Eagles, Churubusco.
â€śItâ€™s tough to play two county rivals back-to-back like that,â€ť Whitko Head Coach Brandon Bradley said. â€śThereâ€™s always a fear of a let down after last (Friday) nightâ€™s loss.â€ť
The Lady Wildcats traveled to â€™Busco Saturday and won 56-37.
Olinske had 17 points â€” and Bradley is happy with her progress.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” The Whitko Lady Wildcat girls basketball team has now lost 11 of its last 13 games to Columbia City.
The visiting Lady Eagles trailed for most of the game, however persevered down the stretch to come away with the win, 44-37.
Emily Whiteleather posted double digits in both points and rebounds for Columbia City.
The Lady Eagles host Snider Tuesday and Whitko heads to Churubusco Saturday (Nov. 12).
Columbia Cityâ€™s JV team won 32-11.
INDIANAPOLIS â€” Twenty-six point two miles.
From downtown Columbia City to downtown Fort Wayne is less than a marathon; 21.7 miles.
The distance from Churubusco to South Whitley on Ind. 205 is 21.1 miles.
Whitko senior cross country runner, Dylan Cozad, ran 26.2 miles in less than three hours.
Cozad participated in the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon Nov. 5, winning the 19 and under age division as a 17-year-old.
The runner finished with a 2:42:48 time which calculates to a 6:12 per mile pace.
Overall, Cozad was 26th out of 2611 runners.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” In the last decade, Columbia City has won 10 out of 12 games against the Wildcats.
But Whitko canâ€™t be taken lightly this season.
The Lady â€™Cats have a game under their belt already, winning decisively over Central Noble Tuesday night, 63-33.
Whitko is under the direction of new head coach Brandon Bradley, who is working to get the Lady Wildcats their first winning season since 2008.
What better way to prove himself than a win over Columbia City?
The Lady Eagles competed in a scrimmage Tuesday, but have yet to get their first-game jitters out of the way.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Whitko stand-out point guard Logan Irwin is going Division I.
Irwin signed with Stetson University Wednesday, a NCAA Division I school in DeLand, Fla.
Though Florida may be unfamiliar territory for Irwin, the head coach isnâ€™t.
With Irwinâ€™s father, Rob, as Head Coach at Whitko, Logan has had the opportunity to get to know several basketball coaches, including former assistant coach at Belmont (University) Head Coach Casey Alexander
â€śI knew that my relationship with Coach Alexander was the best out of all the schools Iâ€™ve looked at,â€ť Irwin said.

ALBION â€” The Lady Wildcats girls basketball team opened its season with a decisive 63-33 win over Central Noble in Albion.
Though, as Head Coach Brandon Bradley said, the first game doesnâ€™t necessarily portray how the season will go, Whitkoâ€™s girls had a lot to offer their fans Tuesday night.
