Boys Basketball sectional previewed

The 2011 Indiana High School boys’ basketball postseason gets underway this week with the sectional round. Saturday, The Post & Mail inserted a special section into the daily edition breaking down the brackets for the three Whitley County schools. Weather cancels sports for third straight night

   Poor road conditions have brought the Whitley County sports schedule to a halt for a third consecutive night. Columbia City's girls' basketball game at home against Huntington North for tonight was postponed one night. The game is set to tip off Friday night at 6:15 p.m.

   Wednesday's Whitko girls' basketball game at Triton has been canceled due to inclement weather. Due to schedule conflicts the game will not be made up. The Lady Wildcats will debut in the sectional tournament at Columbia City 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday.

Grapplers tangle with chance at semis

   The long and whining road to Conseco Fieldhouse takes its second turn for Whitley County wrestlers Saturday.
   With the opening leg of the journey weeding each weight class down to the top four wrestlers, 15 from three schools (Churubusco, Columbia City, Whitko) will appear in the Carroll Individual Regional for a shot at reach the semistate level.
   Each wrestler is looking for his own way to a top four finish that will get him and his school one step away from the state finals.

County advances 15 to regional

   FORT WAYNE — The long postseason trip to an individual state title began for wrestlers from all three Whitley County schools Saturday at Carroll High School.
   With the top four wrestlers in each weight class advancing to the regional level, 15 Whitley County grapplers, including three weight class champions will make the trip back to Carroll for regional.

Col. City unravels, ’Dogs rally

   A fourth-quarter run sparked New Haven just enough for the win in Saturday night’s girls’ basketball game against Columbia City.
   The Lady Bulldogs hung around just a little too long, handing the Lady Eagles a 54-53 conference loss.
Columbia City (10-9, 1-6) stole the momentum early in the game gaining a 19-13 lead after the first eight minutes.
   Corinna Raypole had eight of her 18 points in the first quarter picking up nearly half of the Lady Eagles first-quarter points.

’Busco tops rival Cougars 45-31

   CHURUBUSCO — The season was 2005 when Churubusco girls’ basketball last achieved what it did Saturday night.
   With a 45-31 win over well-known North East Corner Conference rival Central Noble, the Lady Eagles turned the tide in a program that has struggled in recent years.
   Behind Morgan Young’s team-high 15 points, ’Busco (5-13, 2-7) picked up its most wins in six seasons.

Sectional draws rematch of rivals

   INDIANAPOLIS — The brackets were drawn up and the postseason road was paved Sunday night for the 36th annual IHSAA girls’ basketball state tournament.
   Amongst 397 teams, three Whitley County teams are looking for a March 5 date at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne for the state finals. It began with the sectional draw Feb. 8-12.
   Two area rivals will have to go through one another to reach the final game of class 3A.

No. 1 Wabash polishes up TRC at Whitko

   SOUTH WHITLEY — Heading into the final week of the Indiana high school girls’ basketball regular season, the Three Rivers Conference already had its champion with the No. 1 team in class 2A Wabash  locking up back-to-back titles. 
   Whitko had room to move into a three-way tie for second place when the Apaches came to town on Saturday’s senior night.
   A hot shooting Wabash team left the Lady Wildcats alone in third place at the end of the night shooting 23-of-37 from the field and winning 66-47.

Seasoned Eagles take road win

   NEW HAVEN — Leading by as much as 16 points in the second half, Columbia City head coach Chris Benedict saw his team grow up in a big way Friday night.
   The Eagles had their 10th win of the season all but locked up with a 45-29 lead and 4:35 to go in the fourth quarter.
   A little over three minutes later, an 11-0 run by New Haven tested the maturity level of a young Columbia City team, who earlier in the season might have folded.

’Busco doubles rival 62-31

   ALBION — The mark of a quality team is sometimes not measured by how they deal with adversity, but rather with how they maintain their focus and intensity when they are faced with prosperity.
   That was the case for a Churubusco boys’ basketball team that was still able to remain focused and execute well, especially defensively in a 62-31 road win over Northeast Corner Conference foe Central Noble Friday night.
