LOCAL MAN SUCCUMBS: Dies from injuries received in crash

COLUMBIA CITY – A man who was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash north of Columbia City Saturday afternoon has died from his injuries.

According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Frank Boggs, 85, of rural Columbia City, has died from crash injuries.

On Saturday about 4:50 p.m., Boggs was driving west on CR 400 North near Ind. 109. Another driver, Billie Jo Grant, 45, of Columbia City, was driving northbound on Ind. 109 near CR 400 N. Police said Grant's Dodge van struck the driver’s side of Boggs’ Buick passenger car at the intersection of the two roads.

FUTURE VISION: Comprehensive plan for city begins with public workshops

COLUMBIA CITY – A new, revised Comprehensive Plan for the City of Columbia City is out of the starting blocks and flying into the future, courtesy of a public visioning workshop Thursday at two different sites.
The visioning process took place at the Whitley County Government Center during the early afternoon and switched to the Columbia City High School cafeteria in the evening.

MONEY SAVER: Over-65 eligible for tax deduction

WHITLEY COUNTY — Senior homeowners in the county may be eligible for a tax credit of up to $12,480 with the Over-65 Deduction from Assessed Valuation tax credit.
Residents have until Dec. 31 to apply for the tax break. In order to apply for the 2015 tax credit, residents need only their 2013 tax forms, as well as the application from the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.

BLACK ICE: Slick coating causes hazardous driving in Whitley

COLUMBIA CITY – A slick coating of icy precipitation fell throughout Whitley County during the mid-evening hours Friday, causing black ice on roadways and contributing to several property damage vehicle accidents.

Northwest Whitley County near Churubusco was experiencing the black ice conditions on roadways. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution.

At 11 p.m. the temperature hovered around 30 degrees with fog and drizzle making travel treacherous.

CHRISTMAS PARTY: H.A.N.D.S hosts for CANI Head-Start

WHITLEY COUNTY — Whitley County children had an early celebration. Members of the H.A.N.D.S. (Helping Achieve New Direction through Students) Foundation hosted a morning and afternoon Christmas party for the 29 children in the CANI Head-Start program last Thursday.
H.A.N.D.S. is a student group that meets monthly to discuss community needs, review grant requests and allocate funding to projects with an educational focus. Each year members plan a Christmas celebration day filled with holiday-themed activities and treats for the Head-Start children.

COLUMBIA CITY — In some of the oldest church structures in Columbia City and Whitley County there have been, in the past, interesting examples of stained glass windows. Some of these are very intricate, with some of the more modern examples a bit more abstract.
In the early construction of the churches, stained glass windows represented an extravagant expense, and so were donated by the wealthy or sponsored by a church-related group.

Mildred “Midge” Collier, 80, of Larwill, passed away at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City. Born Aug. 11, 1934 in Cumberland, Ky., she was the daughter of James and Lillie (Estep) Bush.
She grew up in Kentucky and married Roy Howard Collier July 6, 1950 in Clintwood, Va. After he was discharged from military service they moved to Detroit, Mich.
