COUNTY UNDER TRAVEL WATCH

February 5, 2014

WHITLEY COUNTY (Feb. 5, 2014) -- Whitley County is under a Travel Watch, according to the Indiana Homeland Security. That means conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a "watch" local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations. This watch is effective until further notice.

HALFTIME SHOW: Locals participate at Super Bowl

COLUMBIA CITY — For Peyton Manning fans, the best part of Sunday night’s Super Bowl was most likely the halftime show — brought to you in part by four Whitley County residents.

There were more than 400 people involved in the production of the halftime show, including Shane Barkley, Keith Gilbert, Kaileb O’Connor and Ashley O’Connor, all of Columbia City.

Gilbert and Barkley have been assisting in the Super Bowl’s halftime show for the last three years. Kaileb and Ashley O’Connor, brother and sister, experienced the trip for the first time.

DRUG BUST: Traffic stop nets cocaine

COLUMBIA CITY — A truck driver was arrested Saturday night by the Indiana State Police after officials found 38 kilograms (84 pounds) of cocaine in his trailer.

Guadalupe Quintanilla, 69, of Fort Wayne, was stopped on U.S. 30 at approximately 7:05 p.m., after police observed the semi committing a traffic violation, in the eastbound lane east of Ind. 9, as well as having an equipment violation.

SNOW COMING: Winter weather on the way for Whitley County

WHITLEY COUNTY — As if January’s record snowfall of 39.9 inches wasn’t enough, Mother Nature is brewing up another snow storm that is expected to come into the area tonight.

Amidst rumors of a 20- to 30-inch snow storm this week, forecasters are predicting a slightly more manageable 6 to 10 inches of snow in the next two days.

The storm is expected to start this afternoon and carry through Wednesday afternoon.

CHILD NEGLECT: Woman receives sentence

COLUMBIA CITY — A woman who pleaded guilty to abandoning her child into the care of a child molester received a five-year sentence Monday.

Joy D. Hughes, 38, of Kendallville, pleaded guilty last month to neglect of a child causing bodily injury, a Class C felony.

For that crime, she was sentenced to the Indiana Department of Correction for five years, with all of that time to serve.

NABBED: Escaped murderer caught in LaPorte County; guards, electric fences didn't stop prison break

IONIA, Mich. (AP) — A convicted killer who authorities say managed to evade guards and peel through two electrically charged fences to escape a Michigan prison was tripped up by transportation issues once on the outside.

After losing the woman he abducted and ditching her Jeep in an Indiana town, authorities say Michael David Elliot made his way to another Indiana community, where he stole another vehicle. But a sheriff's deputy quickly spotted the stolen Chevrolet Monte Carlo on Monday evening and chased after it, leading to Elliot's capture.

Delbert Hipshire, 80

February 3, 2014

Delbert Lee “Del” Hipshire, 80, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 7:25 a.m. Saturday, February 01, 2014 at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted on Friday after an extended illness. He was born on March 1, 1933 in Churubusco, IN, the son of Jesse Adam and Mary Ann (Zolman) Hipshire.

Phyllis Keefer, 86

February 3, 2014

Phyllis Irene Keefer, 86, of Big Lake, Columbia City, passed away at 12:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Norwood Health and Rehab Center, Huntington, after a brief illness.
She was born on July 31, 1927, in Allen County, to Robert J and Elsie I. (Hambleton) Young.
She graduated from Lafayette Center High School with the Class of 1945. She was married on July 4, 1947, in Kentucky to Elmer M. Keefer, Jr.
She moved to Roanoke in 1947, to Zanesville in 1989, and then moved to her present home at Big Lake in 1994.
