’Busco preps for state tournament

WESTFIELD — Defending champs Perry Meridian, Yorktown and Adams Central are also the No. 1 seeds at Saturday’s IHSWCA Team State Dual Meet Tournaments.

Westfield High School, located off U.S. 31, north of Indianapolis, is host for the second annual state meeting, which brings together 24 of Indiana’s best high school squads for a day-long wrestling carnival.
Teams are divided into classes, based on school enrollment.

Stanley Morgan, 52

January 2, 2014

Stanley D. Morgan, 52, of Bluffton, passed away Dec. 22, 2013, at his residence.
He was born March 28, 1961, in Fort Wayne to Harold James Morgan Sr. and Donna Jean Blessing Morgan. They preceded him in death.
Stanley graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1979, and received an associates degree in diesel mechanics.
He was a heavy truck diesel mechanic and a truck driver with Teamsters 716, retiring in 2011.
Stanley enjoyed cooking and barbecuing. He was a great story teller and the family prankster. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews.

Jerry Campbell, 71

January 2, 2014

Jerry L. Campbell, 71, a former resident of the Churubusco area and more recently of Columbia City, passed away at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City.
He had been in failing health for some time and had entered the hospital last Thursday.
Mr. Campbell was born in Rome City Jan. 8, 1942, a son of Joseph G. and Marie L. (Herendeen) Campbell.
His marriage took place July 3, 1959, to Karen G. Whittaker, and he spent most of his adult life in Noble County before moving to his present home in Columbia City in 2012.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY

January 2, 2014

(Jan. 2, 2014) -- The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Whitley County and surrounding areas. Light to moderate snow will continue early this morning, but will begin to diminish during the late morning and afternoon. Additional accumulations of up to 4 inches are possible today.

Increased winds are expected to create blowing snow and drifting snow conditions, which will keep roads snow covered, slick and hazardous.

The winter advisory will remain in effect until 4 p.m. this afternoon.

Firearm trial set for January

December 30, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — A man accused of pointing a firearm at two people will stand trial next month in Whitley County Superior Court.

Trent E. Vanderford, 25, of Columbia City, was arrested in May for pointing a firearm, a Class A misdemeanor.
He will have a jury trial Jan. 23, 2014, at 8 a.m. Jan 7, 2014, is the final date for a plea proposal to be accepted by the defense.

Larwill man jailed after fleeing

WARSAW — A Larwill man was arrested after running from Warsaw police Saturday.

Jeremy James King, 39, of Hammontree Street, Larwill, allegedly led police on a high-speed chase early Saturday morning.

The pursuit ended in a snowy crash after his Pontiac Firebird clipped a parked car and crashed into a snow bank on Anchorage Road, Warsaw.

Lady Eagles take 3rd in tourney

MIDDLEBURY — Columbia City’s girls basketball team returned from its worst loss of the season Friday to Northridge to pick up two wins Saturday.

The Lady Eagles came out third in the Northridge Invitational Saturday, after an overtime, revenge win over East Noble and a victory over Andrean in the morning game.

One week prior, East Noble beat Columbia City by five points. The Lady Eagles sought and found revenge in the tourney, topping the Lady Knights 64-61 in overtime to win the third-place game at Northridge.

Flooded roads can imperil drivers

WHITLEY COUNTY — A southern Indiana woman died on her way to a family gathering Christmas Eve, after attempting to drive through a flooded roadway.

The elderly woman was found several hours later in the flood waters.

In Pike County, officials searched for a missing Illinois woman.

Miami County Tourney winners

December 30, 2013

Whitko’s girls basketball team captured the Miami County Tournament Saturday. Team members include: Jennifer Reiff, Reghan Craig, Haley Yohe, Brianna Cumberland, Hanna Yohe, Aly Reiff, Kelly Reiff, Avaree Freel, Michelle Kelsey, Emily Day, Aly Nicodemus and Jordan Hall. Aly Reiff and Hall were named to the all-tournament team. Whitko beat North Miami in the semifinals, 52-45, and defeated Peru in the championship game, 67-26.
