INDIANAPOLIS (AP) â€” The state Department of Natural Resources is warning Indiana residents to beware of thin ice on ponds and lakes despite recent cold temperatures.
DNR officials say every year people drown after falling through ice.
As ice begins to form on many waterways, Indiana conservation officers are reminding people to put safety first. The DNR says at least 4 inches of ice is recommended for safe ice fishing and 5 inches for snowmobiling.
They also say depending on conditions, ice can change from several inches thick to nearly open water within just a few feet.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” The Columbia City High School Guidance Department will be hosting a Financial Aid Night Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the CCHS auditorium.
A financial aid representative from a local university will be present to answer questions about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
All college bound seniors, and juniors who plan to graduate early, must file a FAFSA by March 10, 2014.Guidance staff encourage parents and students to attend this free information night.

Tom Dome, who works for Smith and Sons Funeral Home in Columbia City, braves the cold weather Thursday while clearing the parking lot at the funeral parlor. Winds caused it to feel even colder, as the wind chill in Whitley County dipped well below zero Wednesday night into Thursday. More snow is in the forecast for Friday and Saturday.
CHURUBUSCO â€” While Smith Townshipâ€™s Fire Department fights fires of all kinds â€” car, home, barn and field â€” the department faced a blaze of a different kind Thursday afternoon.
The firemen were called to the home of their assistant chief, Kris Bair, at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday, to find smoke coming from the roof of the residence.
Bairâ€™s home, located on the 8000 block of East U.S. 33, north of Churubusco, had a quick response from four fire departments, Smith Township, Thorncreek Township, LaOtto and Huntertown.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” A Columbia City man is facing a charge of dealing methamphetamine.
Jacob A. Hinen, 28, was arrested Dec. 6 and is accused of possession of paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance in addition to the methamphetamine dealing charge.
Hinen was arrested along with his girlfriend, Kindra M. Wine, 24, of Columbia City.

Tuesday, Ind. Gov. Mike Pence released his 2014 Education Agenda, detailing his proposals for bettering education across the state.
â€śWe need to work today to do what is necessary for our children to be successful tomorrow,â€ť Pence said. â€śOur fundamental moral obligation as parents is the well-being of our children and their preparedness for life after they leave home.â€ť
(Dec. 13, 2013) â€” After bitterly-cold temperatures made worse by winds yesterday, conditions will be more moderate today with highs in the upper 20s this afternoon.
Snow will begin to accumulate by midnight tonight with 3 to 6" spread over the area into early Saturday afternoon.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the area. Snow is anticipated to continue through Saturday morning making travel conditions difficult.

Angels, wise men and gift bearers were part of the cast at Churubusco United Methodist Church for the Festival of the Hanging of the Greens Saturday and Sunday. The annual holiday program featured live animals, music and pageantry. Cast members worked two weeks to put together this yearâ€™s presentation. The festival has been an annual tradition for the church for a number of decades.
Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of School Trustees will meet Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Items on the agenda include the introduction of the districtâ€™s school resource officer, Mike Peterson, and a presentation by Maintenance Director Dan Rex.
Smith-Green Community Schools Board of School Trustees will meet Monday at 7 p.m.
Whitko Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees will meet Monday at 6:30 p.m.
