Zachariah Ballard, 28

December 9, 2013

Zachariah Joseph Ballard, 28, of Columbia City, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, as a result of an automobile accident at 11:01 p.m. in rural Whitley County.
Born Aug. 23, 1985, in Fort Wayne, to Mart Eugene and Sally Jo (Prough) Ballard.
He was a lifetime resident of Columbia City, graduating from Columbia City High School with the Class of 2004.

Larry Ware, 50

Larry E. Ware, 50, of Fort Wayne, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
Born April 25, 1963, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Charles R. Ware and Margaret Roeger.
Survivors include his father, Charles (Leota) Ware of Fort Wayne; daughters, Elizabeth (Scotty) Kessler of Columbia City and Samantha Geschwind of Fort Wayne; sisters, Carol Flinn of Fort Wayne and Kathi Young of Fort Wayne; brother, Dan Ware; grandchildren, Dixie Kessler, Chloe Oberley, Lenabella Papenbrock and Corey Papenbrock.

Kids share meal with Santa

COLUMBIA CITY — Candy canes and cookies were on the menu at Downtown On The Square Saturday.

Far from its normal fine dining, the restaurant, located across from the Whitley County Courthouse in Columbia City, changed its culinary specialties to host a breakfast with Santa event for children.

The breakfast is just one of the many downtown appearances Santa Claus has made this holiday season.

Dedicated Park Board member says goodbye

SOUTH WHITLEY — After spearheading two large-scale park renovations, Katey Till announced she was stepping down from the South Whitley Park Board.

Till, a South Whitley resident, is a mother, wife and active volunteer.

With so much on her to-do list, she told South Whitley Town Council members at a meeting in November that she would be resigning her seat on the board.

“It’s time,” Till said. “I’ve done what I wanted to do.”
Official resignation of Till’s spot will be Friday. Her departure is in addition to another vacant seat needing to be filled.

Col. City man dies in crash

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man died in a crash in Whitley County Friday night.

Zachariah “Zach” Ballard, 28, was driving north on County Road 450 East, south of Cider Mill Road, when police believe his truck traveled left of center and ran off the roadway.

Investigation by the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department showed that Ballard’s vehicle struck two trees, and when officials arrived, Ballard was partially ejected from the truck.

The Post & Mail nets slew of awards in HSPA contest

INDIANAPOLIS — The Post & Mail newspaper, Columbia City, brought home 10 awards from the Hoosier State Press Association’s yearly banquet Saturday.

Editors Christie Workman and Nicole Ott were awarded for feature and sports articles, as well as photography.

Ott earned Photo of the Year in The Post & Mail’s division, with the front-page photo of Ethan Krider and Jade North for Valentine’s Day.
The photo also won its category, Best Feature Photo, and was a contender for overall Photo of the Year, an award won by The Evansville Courier and Press.

Eagles drop second game

FORT WAYNE — Difficulty getting inside, along with their opponents’ athleticism, made for a difficult Friday for the Columbia City Eagles boys basketball team.

One season after defeating Fort Wayne Northrop, the Eagles fell to the Bruins by a final of 44-24.

There were times when the game was close. Northrop had just a 9-8 lead after one quarter, and Columbia City cut the margin to 20-18 in the third quarter. But overall, it was not enough.

Community Celebrates Christmas

Whitley County’s Community Christmas Celebration began last night at 6 p.m. and will continue tonight from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event is free and features a live Nativity on the Courthouse lawn and music performed by various residents inside the Courthouse.

Thalman receives four-year sentence for drug crimes

COLUMBIA CITY — A Churubusco teenager pleaded guilty Monday and received a four-year sentence for several drug-related crimes.

Timothy L.K. Thalman, Jr.., 19, pleaded guilty to possession of two or more precursors with intent to manufacture methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Judge James Heuer gave him a two-year sentence for the first charge, and a one-year sentence for each of the last two, all consecutive.

Two of those four years will be served at the Whitley County Jail, and the other two will be suspended.

City electric in good shape financially

COLUMBIA CITY — While Columbia City’s Wastewater Department may be considering a rate increase due to poor financial standing, Columbia City Clerk-Treasurer Rosie Coyle said the city’s electric department has a good cash-flow.

“The electric department is in good shape. That’s one we don’t have to worry about,” Coyle said.

While the department is doing well financially, the city is still conserving funds for upcoming projects, such as the fiber network the city may install on the current electrical poles.
