COLUMBIA CITY â Columbia Cityâs girls golf home opener at Eagle Glen Tuesday couldnât have been a tighter match.
The Lady Eagles beat Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Bellmont by one stroke, 194-195.
Jackie Leeuw and Jessica Klemm tied for match medalist for the Lady Eagles, both firing a 46.
Sydney Fort wasnât far behind, scoring a 48. Allison and Bethany Yoder both shot a 51.
Though there was no official junior varsity match, Columbia Cityâs Taylor Daniel scored a 47, Mackenzie Lane shot a 48, Cheyenne Johnson finished with a 51 and Athena Arnold had a 55.
CHURUBUSCO â The Churubusco Lady Eagle volleyball team opened a new season, hosting the Leo Lady Lions in Tuesday nightâs non-conference match up.
The Lady Eagles shook off first game jitters, but despite putting up an increasingly competitive fight as the evening went on, the host fell in three games 25-13, 25-19 and 27-25 to open the season.
COLUMBIA CITY â The Fall Festival, originally planned to take place Sept. 22 has expanded into a two-day event.
âIt has grown to be a bigger event than what we originally planned, which is great,â said Park Director Mark Green at the Columbia City Common Council meeting. âI think it will be really neat.â
Mayor Ryan Daniel said several people who were involved in the Fall Festival sat down last week and talked about turning it into a two day event.
CHURUBUSCO â Katy Hockermanâs nomadic lifestyle all began when she was just a little girl and wanted an Irish accent.
âMy dad told me that if I wanted that accent I would have to go to Ireland and live there for a while,â said Hockerman, 18, and a recent graduate of Churubusco Junior Senior High School.
After spending a year in Denmark in 2010-11, this young woman is taking a gap year from college and going to Taiwan for the 2012-13 academic year.
Hockerman has just been awarded one of 600 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarships.
COLUMBIA CITY â School begins Tuesday for Whitley County Consolidated Schools, and itâs a toss-up who is more excited at Northern Heights Elementary School, the new principal or his three children.
Jake Hoag, 38, was born and raised in Columbia City. Now he is excited to be principal of Northern Heights Elementary School.
âAll three of my children are students here, and they are as excited as I am. Not many people can say they work with their own children, but I can. I am so blessed,â said Hoag.
COLUMBIA CITY â With the Fall Festival approaching in September, an amendment was passed on first reading concerning the cityâs Fireworks Ordinance at the Columbia City Common Council meeting Tuesday.
According to the City Fire Chief Tom LaRue, there were two issues being addressed in the amendment.
âThere are two things. One portion of it is a clarification that we do not regulate anything other than consumer grade fireworks,â said LaRue.
Public displays of fireworks are governed by Indiana Code, according to the ordinance.
SOUTH WHITLEY â Whitko High School (WHS) will start the 2012-13 school year with numerous new faces. Five new teachers, out of a staff of 31, as well as a new athletic director and assistant principal, will be under the leadership of former Assistant Principal Dave Parker, who now sits in the seat of principal.
âWe are going to stumble a bit early on, but itâs going to work out,âsaid Parker. âItâs nice to have new perspectives and ideas that come with new staff.â
Larry Alan Falcone, 64, of Huntington, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 12:12 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at Norwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Huntington.
Larry was born Nov. 19, 1947, in Huntington, to Russell and Patricia (Haneline) Falcone. He graduated from Huntington High School in 1966. Larry was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corp in 1967, and served as a corporal in the Vietnam War.
LOS ANGELESÂ â Churubusco native, Kayla Crance, isnât just gushing over âMcDreamy,â sheâs acting with him. Crance will appear on the upcoming season premiere of Greyâs Anatomy, an ABC prime-time medical drama, starring Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd, also known as âMcDreamy.â
Since graduating in 2011 from Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), sheâs been working in some background acting and was fortunate enough to appear as a featured background actor in the Sept. 27 episode of Greyâs Anatomy.
