SYRACUSE — The hoops were good to one Lady Wildcat Tuesday night but for the Whitko girls’ basketball team it wasn’t good enough for a victory.
As the Lady Wildcats hit the road to Syracuse, junior point guard Micaela Sylvester came away with a career night. Unfortunately, a 29-point scoring game for Sylvester came as Wawasee edged Whitko 68-67.
The Wildcats biggest problem was Kilee Knafel. The sophomore guard lit Whitko (8-9) up for 37 points over four quarters of play.

AVILLA — In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt was President of the United States, the Wright Brothers were granted a patent on their “Flying-Machine” and the first airplane flight occurred in Europe.
Speeding was such an issue that by 1906 20 states had speed limits of 20 miles per hour.
The average worker made $12.98 for a 59-hour work week and the first radio broadcast of the human voice was transmitted from Brant Rock, Mass.
Life expectancy was 46.3 years for males and 47.3 years for females.
COLUMBIA CITY - With classical music played by harpist Dawn Haupt and string ensemble Music D’Arco, the Peabody Public Library welcomed patrons to the dedication of the recently completed Robert E. Brittain Memorial Auditorium. The nearly two- hour program included introductions of the library board and staff and those who did the construction work. It concluded with a tribute by many of his former students to Robert Brittain, who passed away in April and for whom the auditorium is named.
Betty Jean Krom, 81, a resident of South Whitley, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City where she had been a resident since Friday.
She was born July 13, 1929 in Thorncreek Township, a daughter of Manuel and Elma (Gaerte) Smith. Her formative years were spent in Thorncreek Township and she attended Thorncreek School.
She was first employed at Dana for 12 years and later Lyle Electric from 1980 until 1990.
Kristina L. Carpenter, 37, of Columbia City, died at 1:49 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
Born May 31, 1973, she was a daughter of Glen E. and Margaret M. (Carpenter) Scoles.She served in the Indiana National Guard.
Survivors include her mother; daughters, Britnee Ballard, Amber Billman and Kristlen Carpenter; son, Dustane Ballard; brothers, Gary Carpenter and Paul Carpenter; and granddaughter, Kaylyn Cameron.
Carl Marrs, Jr., 86, of San Diego, Calif. passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 at Grossmont Gardens Health Care Center in San Diego. He had been in failing health for several years.
He was born June 30, 1924, a son of Carl and Vada (Weaver) Marrs of Pierceton. He graduated from Larwill High School in 1942.
He was married to June Anderson of Washington Township Jan. 12, 1946. Nine months later they moved to San Diego where he worked for Smith Brothers Machine Shop for 39 years until he retired.
Sharon Kay Roberson, 61, a resident of rural Churubusco in Allen County, passed away at 1:50 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. She had been seriously ill for the past two weeks.
Ms. Roberson was born in Wolf Lake Dec. 24, 1949, a daughter of Ralph and Madeline (Rosenogle) Roberson. She was a lifelong resident of Eel River Township and graduated with the first class from Carroll High School in 1969.
Jerry L. McGuire, 62, a resident of rural Churubusco, passed away at 4:19 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at the family residence in Smith Township. Although he had been in failing health since October, his death was unexpected.
Mr. McGuire was born March 15, 1948 in Wolf Lake, a son of Carl and Pauline (Weidman) McGuire. He graduated from Churubusco High School in 1966, and was a lifelong resident of the Churubusco area.
Stephen L. Barton-Hunley, 23, of Fort Wayne died at 4:14 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 at his residence in Fort Wayne. Born Oct. 26, 1987 in Fort Wayne, he was a son of Sam L. Hunley and Barbara D. Brenneke.
Harold O. Fairchild, Sr., 74, widely acquainted area contractor and a resident of rural Columbia City, passed away at 6:07 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He had been a patient there since Monday after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home.
Mr. Fairchild was born Nov. 15, 1936 in Huntington County, a son of Herbert R. and Myrtle L. (DeWitt) Fairchild. As a child he moved with his parents to rural Allen County. He spent his formative years there, and graduated from Jefferson Center High School in 1955.
