LAGRANGE — High hopes turned to an early exit for Churubusco basketball teams Wednesday night.
A night after having the opening round postponed, ’Busco squads took the court at Prairie Heights for the first of what it hoped was four games and a championship in the North East Corner Conference tournament.
That didn’t happen as the Lady Eagles (3-11) opened the girl-boy doubleheader with a 47-32 loss to the Lady Panthers (7-7).
WATERLOO — When coaches find their team in the midst of a difficult season, they begin to look for little signs of improvement. They begin to set the more basic goals in order to move the team closer to the larger goal of overall success.
With six varsity wrestlers out of the lineup due to injury or match limits, the Columbia City wrestling team traveled to Northeast Hoosier Conference rival DeKalb Wednesday to face the Barons.
COLUMBIA CITY — Mayor Jim Fleck said there are several reasons behind his decision to not seek re-election for the post he currently holds.
Primary among those reasons are family, health and the state of the economy.
At the end of 2011, Fleck will have finished his second term in office, and he says it’s time for someone else to take over.
“There’s lots about this job I like, but I’ve done it for eight years, it’s time for someone else to look at it,” he said, adding that he believes the city is a better place than when he started.

COLUMBIA CITY — A routine probation search has netted yet another methamphetamine lab in Columbia City.
Just a little more than a week after a 911 call for a an unconscious infant led police to a suspected clandestine meth lab, county police entered the home of Kyle Lloyd Barker at 108 E. Hanna Street Tuesday night and discovered a meth manufacturing operation in his downstairs bedroom.
Barker, 24, was arrested at 3:50 p.m. and booked in Whitley County Jail on seven drug-related charges.
Betty I. Gaff, 85, a former resident of Churubusco and more recently of Columbia City, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Parkview Whitley Hospital. She had been a patient there since Dec. 31.
Ms. Gaff was born April 23, 1925 in Churubusco, a daughter of Roy and Alice (Hull) Gaff. She graduated from Churubusco High School in 1943, and was a lifelong resident of Churubusco until moving to Columbia City one year ago.
Upon completing her education, she became employed at General Electric in Fort Wayne and worked there for 44 years, retiring in 1985.
COLUMBIA CITY — State lawmakers representing Whitley County responded to Gov. Mitch Daniels’ State of the State Address, referring to his vision for Indiana’s immediate future as optimistic and ambitious.
According to Columbia City resident and State Sen. Jim Banks, Indiana Senate Republicans say their caucus stands ready to work with Gov. Mitch Daniels and other lawmakers to balance the state’s two-year state budget and to consider reforms outlined in the governor’s Tuesday speech.
Marsha Colleen Schinbeckler, 61, of Columbia City, passed away at 12:48 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 at Parkview Whitley Hospital. Born Aug. 29, 1949 in Indianapolis, she was a daughter of Marshall C. and Gayle M. (Brumbaugh) Schinbeckler.
Lois Eleanor Kissinger-Mossman, 97, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:35 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at her residence. Born July 2, 1913 in Whitley County, she was a daughter of Orland James and Ada May (Nei) Hurd.
Donald A. Schwenn, 81, passed away Jan. 8, 2011. He was born Nov. 28, 1929 in Milwaukee, Wis. to Walter and Helen Schwenn.
He proudly served in the United States Army. After his discharge from the military, he moved to Minneapolis/ St.Paul, Minn. In 1960, he moved to Columbia City. There he owned and operated Viking Inc. for 55 years.
Louise Hershey Daily, 87, of Columbia City, died at 6:25 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since September 2001.
She was born Aug. 29, 1923 in Churubusco, a daughter of Dr. Ernest A. and Mary Elizabeth (Coldren) Hershey. A lifelong resident of Whitley County, she graduated from Churubusco High School and completed nurses training at St. Joseph Hospital.
A registered nurse, she worked at the VA Hospital in Fort Wayne, J.I. Case in Churubusco, R.R. Donnelly & Sons, Columbia City Nursing Home and Miller’s Merry Manor.
