COLUMBIA CITY â€” Two men who were arrested on drug charges in a traffic stop last week had their initial appearance in court Monday.
Michael Yoha and Vanness Oliver, both of Mansfield, Ohio, were arrested April 30 and charged with dealing a Schedule 1 controlled substance and possession of a narcotic.
Both men pleaded not guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court and were appointed public defenders. Yoha will be represented by Brad Voelz and Oliver by Brad Baber.
Both men will be in court June 3. Oliver was released on bail Monday.
WHITLEY COUNTY â€” The investigation continues after a body was found in a wooded area in Whitley County Wednesday night.
Authorities suspect foul play after a man was found dead on County Road 800 East (County Line Road) north of Old Trail Road.
Whitley County Coroner Randy Dellinger said the body had been there for a while, and was found face down in the woods.
The probe, headed by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Indiana State Police, assisted by the Whitley County Sheriffâ€™s Department, is ongoing at this time.
Betty J. McManama, 89, a resident of Columbia City, died at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Millerâ€™s Merry Manor where she had been a resident for the past month.
She was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Washington Township, a daughter of the late Clarence and Osie (Huffman) Juillerat.
Her formative years were spent in Washington Township. She graduated from Washington Center High School in 1942.
WHITLEY COUNTY, IND â€”The Criminal Investigation Division of the Indiana State Police from the Fort Wayne Post is investigating the the death of a man who was found this past evening in a wooded area near the Whitley/Allen County line.
According to First Sergeant Mark Carunchia, an unidentified male was discovered just after 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday night by a property owner in a heavily wooded area in the 800 block of County Line Road in Whitley County. It is not known exactly how long the deceased man's body has been there.
WHITLEY COUNTY â€” Police are currently investigating a death on County Line Road north of U.S. 30 in Whitley County.
No more information is available at this time.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Whitko's girls track team split a three-way meet with North Miami and Tippecanoe Valley Monday night.
Whitko placed second to Tippy Valley, which had 81 points, but defeated North Miami, which finished with 17 points. Whitko tallied 66 points on the night.
The Lady Wildcats had several first-place finishes, led by the Craig sisters.
Reghan Craig placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18 seconds. Cagney Craig, her older sister, took first in the pole vault with a height of 7 feet.
Regan also came in second in the long jump at 13 feet, 7 inches.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Whitko's softball team dropped a double-header to Three Rivers Conference foe Northfield Monday night.
Despite outhitting the Lady Norsemen 8-7, Whitko fell 6-3 in game two, and 6-4 in game one.
In game one, the conference tilt was tied 2-2 at the end of the first inning. Each team scored again in the third, tying the score at three.
Northfield picked up an unanswered run in the top of the fifth, but Whitko found home plate again in the sixth, tying the score again at four.
The Lady Norsemen went on a 2-0 run in the seventh to take the win, 6-4.
LA GRANGE â€” Churubuscoâ€™s girls tennis team fell to Prairie Heights Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles lost 4-1 to the host Panthers.
â€˜Busco got the win at No. 2 doubles, as the pair of Maggie Kitt and Nikki Esslinger won in straight sets.
In singles play, Churubuscoâ€™s Cheyenne Connor fell in No. 1 singles, Audfrey Gierscher lost in No. 2 singles and Kayleen Mitchell lost a tight match in No. 3 singles.
Madi Cook and Camille Cseri fell in the other doubles match for the Lady Eagles.
ROCHESTER â€” Whitkoâ€™s boys golf team got nosed out on the road against Tippecanoe Valley.
The Wildcats fell to the Vikings by just two strokes, 176-178 at Round Barn Golf Club.
Colton LeTourneau paced Whitko by shooting 43. This tied him for second-place with Tippy Valleyâ€™s Bryce Zimmerman. Corey Carson of Tippy Valley was the match medalist, carding 39 for the day.
The next three Whitko golfers all shot better than the third-place Viking golfer, with Cole Bechtold getting 44, Will Peters 45 and Danny Zawlocki 46. Jacob Silveus rounded out the Wildcat scoring at 55.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Whitko's girls tennis team dropped a close, 3-2, match to Central Noble Monday.
Aressa Tackwell won her No. 2 singles match to get the Lady Wildcats there first point of the night. Tackwell took a 6-3, 6-0 win.
Shortly after, Whitko's No. 1 doubles team of Laura Alfieri and Abby Marshall won 6-1, 6-1.
But the Lady Wildcats suffered losses in the other matches, giving Central Noble the 3-2 advantage.
Whitko was swept by Northfield last week.
The Lady Wildcats had some players missing Monday, forcing some line-up changes and a default win at No. 2 doubles.
