Mildred D. Burns, 93, of Columbia City, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since Feb. 17, 2010.
She was born Oct. 27, 1917 in Noble County, a daughter of Charles and Nora (Stover) Rigel. She was educated in the Green Center School and later Columbia Township School after her family moved to Whitley County.
Louis E. Wuellner, 82, of Tri-Lakes, died Saturday, Feb 5, 2011 at Lutheran Hospital.
Born to Edgar and Gertrude (Lichtsinn) Wuellner in Indianapolis, he graduated from Butler University in 1951, and served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant JG. He worked at RCA in Pennsauken, N.J. and Marion. He retired from ITT in Fort Wayne after 29 years of service.
Harold James Morgan, Sr., 82, of Columbia City, went to walk with his Lord Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011. Born Dec. 6, 1928 in Green Bay, Wis., he was a son of the late Raymond and Clara Meyers Morgan.
COLUMBIA CITY — Additional charges have been filed against a couple arrested for alleged drug offenses earlier this year.
Janel M. Creech, 36, and Travis A. Wonderly, 21 were charged Jan. 7 with manufacturing methamphetamine and other drug-related offenses in connection with a Jan. 3 incident that resulted in the death of Creech’s 5-month-old baby girl.
On Friday, Whitley County Prosecutor Matt Rentschler filed an additional charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death against both suspects. The charge is a Class A felony.
FORT WAYNE — As a result of competition at Saturday’s Carroll individual regional wrestling tournament nine Whitley County wrestlers will take the next step toward an individual state title.
By placing in the top four at the regional those wrestlers will advance to next Saturday’s semistate at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The Whitko Wildcats will advance five wrestlers by virtue of three second place and two fourth place finishes.
WARSAW — The Richter name is back at the state finals but it’s with a new face.
Saturday, Columbia City freshman Andrea Richter picked up where her older four-time state finalist sister Haley Richter left off.
Andrea Richter went into the Warsaw swimming sectional final Saturday seeded as the top swimming in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
February 5th
Snowfall has brought the Whitley County sports schedule to a halt again. The Churubusco and Columbia City boys' basketball games scheduled for Saturday night have been canceled. Columbia City's home game against Norwell will be a made up Monday (Feb. 7) in a tripleheader beginning with the freshmen game at 5:15 p.m. Churubusco's trip to Garrett has not been rescheduled yet. DENVER — The Wildcats took the court with heavy hearts Friday night at North Miami.
Minus head coach Rob Irwin, who began treatment for Leukemia this week, Whitko was able to pull off a conference win at North Miami 64-51 for their coach. In the process, the Wildcats clinched at worst a share of the Three Rivers Conference title.
Not only was Whitko’s leading scorer lacking his head coach, Logan Irwin has not played as a Wildcat without his father on the sideline.
“I wanted this really bad. I wanted this more than anything.”
Columbia City senior Sierra Burlage got what she wanted Friday night when the Lady Eagles basketball team held their final home game of the regular season.
LAGRANGE — A North East Corner Conference doubleheader took Churubusco basketball on the road Friday night.
A total of five points made up two wins over Lakeland for the Eagles.
The boys team (9-4, 6-1) held their second-place spot in the NECC one game back of Westview.
While the boys’ held off the Lakers 46-44 for their sixth win in the NECC, the Lady Eagles were busy in the early game extending their winning streak to three.
