Madge Harshbarger, 88

October 17, 2012

Madge L. (White) Harshbarger, 88, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
Born in Whitley County, Madge worked as a clerk with the Indiana Department of Transportation for 11 years, retiring Sept. 1, 1986.
She was a member of Saint Joseph United Methodist Church; St. Joe United Methodist Women; Eastern Star #432; Worthy Matron in 1995; was a volunteer at a community center for two years and Parkview Seniors for 12 years.
She loved to travel with friends.

CCHS: Band garners silver rating

CHESTERTON — The Columbia City High School Marching Eagles performed at the Indiana State School Music Association’s Class B Regional competition Saturday at Chesterton High School, garnering a silver rating.
The Marching Eagles competed against 14 other bands — 10 of which will continue on to the semi-state level competition in two weeks.
The band’s show this year was titled “Flight of Fantasy,” featuring music from the Final Fantasy game series composed by Nobuo Uematsu.
The band’s leader pointed out the group’s rigorous rehearsal schedule, which begins before the school year.

PATRIOT SIGN: Moved to spot near Larwill

LARWILL — The spokesman for the Whitley County political group responsible for a controversial billboard that was removed Monday from a location near the Allen County line says the advertisement’s new location near Larwill is even better.
David Ditton, representing the Whitley County Patriots, said the advertising company Perma Advertising based in Pierceton was asked by a representative of Steel Dynamics, Inc. on Thursday to have the billboard removed as soon as possible.

LARWILL: Woman gets six years for meth crimes

COLUMBIA CITY — A Larwill woman pleaded guilty Monday to drug related charges that stemmed from a joint operation between Whitley and Kosciusko county’s Drug Task forces.
April Rogers,, 32, of Larwill, pleaded guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court to charges stemming from an incident in March. Rogers received a sentence of six years to be served in its entirety.

WOLFE: Appointed to Plan Commission

CHURUBUSCO — Out of seven applicants, the Whitley County Commissioners appointed Brad Wolfe to fill the vacant spot on the Whitley County Planning Commission. More information will follow in Wednesday's edition.

Evelyn Swartz, 84

October 15, 2012

Evelyn J. Swartz, 84, of South Whitley, passed away at 4:55 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at her daughter’s residence in Larwill.
Born June 19, 1928, in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Charles W. and Fannie R. (Hartman) Gradeless.
A lifelong resident of Whitley County, she attended school in both Etna and Wolf Lake and graduated from Columbia City High School with the class of 1946.
On July 2, 1948, she married Harold L. Swartz at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Columbia City.

Stanley Loe, 91

October 15, 2012

Stanley Loe, 91, of Panama City, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at a local nursing home. He was a 26-year resident of Bay County, having moved here from West Palm Beach, Fla.
Mr. Loe was a member of First Pentecostal Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Silver Star while serving under General George S. Patton in the 80th Division. He retired from Rinker Materials as a chief estimator. Mr. Loe enjoyed fishing, golfing and square dancing.

LARWILL: Trick-or-treat date, time announced

LARWILL — Members of the Larwill Town Council approved the day and time for trick-or-treat at their meeting Thursday.
“It will be Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.,” said Clerk-Treasurer Renee Sills.
Sills said the sheriff’s department is usually on patrol every Halloween as children go from door to door.
In other business:
A motion was approved to adopt the budget that has been appropriately advertised.
The new heating and cooling for the Larwill Town Hall has been tabled as the bids expired on a 30-day time limit.

TRAIL: Construction starts this week

COLUMBIA CITY — After meeting with the engineer and the trail general contractor for the Blue River Trail’s extension project last week, Columbia City Community Development Director Jeff Walker said slight modifications have been made to the exact routing and elevations of the trail.
“You would never know because it’s just a matter of inches,” said Walker. “It does allow us better drainage of the field, and also to save some additional trees.”

Roush advances to semi-state

LIGONIER — Local cross country runners competed in the West Noble Regional Saturday in Ligonier.

While 15 Whitley County harriers entered the regional, only one is advancing to next week’s semi-state meet at New Haven — Columbia City junior Samantha Roush.

Roush placed third in the girls race with a season-best time, 18:52.81.

Roush suffered a preseason injury, and Columbia City Head Coach Bob Fahl said she’s been improving with every meet.

“She was very strong, very focused, very controlled ... very good,” Fahl said.

Money was raised for Leadership Whitley County through a sand volleyball tournament at DeVol Field...
