COLUMBIA CITY â€” Storms and wet weather relocated Whitley Countyâ€™s Relay for Life event indoors, but that did not seem to dampen the spirits of those who came together to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society (ACS).
â€śA great big thank you to everyone for coming out to support their community,â€ť said Tammy Gross, a committee member. â€śWe appreciate their willingness to go with the flow when we moved inside after many had already set up their tents outside.â€ť
BLOOMINGTON â€” Five Whitley County athletes competed in the Indiana State Track Meet last weekend.
Three tracksters were named all-state â€” Samantha Roush, Katie Monk and Austin McClure placed in the top nine.
Columbia Cityâ€™s Roush, who has finished 10th for the last two seasons, came in fifth in the 1,600-meter run Saturday.
â€śSam ran as perfect of a race as she could,â€ť Columbia City Head Track Coach Bob Fahl said. â€śShe was really determined to get a medal.â€ť
Fahl said she was able to take an inside lane and stay in the front of the pack througout the race.
PIERCETON â€” A project hearing has been set for Whitko Community School Corporation that will begin the process of two major construction endeavors for the district.
Discussion will continue on building a new Pierceton Elementary School and remodeling the existing South Whitley Elementary School at a meeting set for June 17 at 6:30 p.m.
At the May school board meeting, members heard from Superintendent Steve Clason on a proposed building project.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Efforts are being made to pave a 1,600-foot long recreational path in South Whitley.
The Friends of the Eel River Trail experienced success after constructing the Columbia City Trailhead in 2010, located along the Blue River Trail on Whitley Street.
Now the nonprofit is working to establish a trail in South Whitley that will revitalize a retired train trestle off of Calhoun Street.
Further developments are being discussed to connect the trail with one within the town limits that is a current project of Whitley On The Move.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Red and blue gowns adorned Whitko High School seniors as they paraded into WHSâ€™s gymnasium for its commencement ceremony last night.
The Class of 2013 graduated 122 students and Superintendent Steve Clason described the group as the â€śbest achieving class in Whitkoâ€™s history.â€ť
Valedictorian Holly Frantz recounted the comical occurrences during the four years spent at Whitko. Practical jokes, pranks and good memories were relived.
WARSAW â€” â€śWe got the hex off of Columbia City golf for the 10-year drought.â€ť
Those words from Columbia City Boys Golf Head Coach Andrew Thompson sum up what was an outstanding day, as the Eagles advanced to the regional round for the first time since 2003.
Columbia City came in third at the sectional at Stonehenge Country Club, five strokes behind the host-Tigers, who won with a score of 314. Triton was second, four strokes ahead of the Eaglesâ€™ 319.
(May 31, 2013) -- Whitley County Emergency Management Agency has advised the county of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for all of Whitley County until 10 a.m. Saturday.
Update at 9:40 p.m.: The watch remains in effect. A large cell is coming to the county from the west in the next half hour. Citizens are cautioned to be prepared for high winds.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Edman Michael Anthony Lis, 55, formerly of Chicago, will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 451 W. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake, Ill. Monsignor Daniel Hermes will be the celebrant. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Ill.
The visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m., Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of prayers at 11 a.m., at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.

The new equipment was installed and open to children to utilize last week.
Adventure Mania is the second phase of the town park renovation. Doodle Bug Village, also in South Whitleyâ€™s town park, was erected over the last several years.
