City tops Whitko in county-rival match, 3-1

SOUTH WHITLEY — Despite holding the lead for most of the game, Whitko’s girls soccer team fell to Columbia City Wednesday night after holding a 1-0 lead for more than 40 minutes of play.

Columbia City’s Shila Tolliver sparked a 3-0 run with 13 minutes left in the game, leading the Lady Eagles to a 3-1 win over the county rival.

The lone goal of the first half was scored by Whitko’s Sydney Sims, putting the Lady ’Cats up 1-0 until late in the second half.

Petra: Homegrown band reunites to deliver a classic performance

HAMILTON — In the 1970s, a Christian rock band was being formed around the Fort Wayne and northwest Ohio areas. Little did these holy rock-n-rollers know, their music would strike a resounding chord for future Christian musicians. Having performed in iconic Fort Wayne venues such as Adam’s Apple, the group recorded in the Fort Wayne area during its early years.
Today, after decades of hits, the 1980s classic group, Petra, will have a homecoming of sorts, performing Sunday at Hamilton High School, 903 S. Wayne St., Hamilton.

POWER PROPOSAL: Council entertains IMPA possibilities

SOUTH WHITLEY – The South Whitley Town Council met Tuesday night with a full agenda waiting its attention. Part of the night’s meeting was devoted to a presentation made by Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) in relation to a new energy plan for the town.

V-BALL BENEFIT HELPS LOCAL MAN: Hoffman paralyzed in July; vows to walk again

COLUMBIA CITY — Life for Kent Hoffman changed drastically on July 23 at 6 p.m. After working hard at the farm all day in temperatures that exceeded 90 degrees, Hoffman came home to take a break. He was going to clean the pool and then lay out on the sun deck and take a nap. For some as yet unknown reason, he fell through the railing hitting his head and landing on his back. Hoffman knew immediately that he had broken his neck. He lay there unable to move for six hours.

FESTIVAL FIREWORKS: City officials pleased despite bad weather

COLUMBIA CITY — Despite strong rain showers and even instances of hail in the afternoon that sent many local citizens taking cover in their cars, city officials said the fireworks which took place later Saturday night at the Fall Festival went smoothly.
“After about 3:30 p.m., when the sun and blue sky came out, it was really nice weather for fireworks out there,” said Mayor Ryan Daniel.
Daniel complimented the volunteer fire department, who parked cars for the event, and the park staff.

TREE BOARD: City council reappoints two members

COLUMBIA CITY — Two Columbia City Tree Board members were reappointed to the board at Columbia City’s Common Council meeting Tuesday.
“There are two tree board members who are up for reappointment,” said Mayor Ryan Daniel to the council. “One of them is Gloria Banker, the other is Ken Lundquist (tree board president).”
The board approved the motion to reappoint both members.
In other business, the Salary Range Ordinance was passed.

SMALL TOWN, BIG NEED: South Whitley sees exponential growth in the need for food

SOUTH WHITLEY – South Whitley has operated a food bank for more than 20 years. In that time, the need for the food bank has grown. According to Co-Director Tonya Warner, the numbers grow each week.
“We feed about 80 to 100 people a month, but we’ve been adding two to four new families each week,” said Warner. “The need is growing as the price of gas, electricity and other things continue to rise.”
Warner, along with Mark and Michelle Pratt run the South Whitley Area Emergency Food Bank.
