Col. City falls to undefeated Bellmont

DECATUR — Columbia City’s golf team traveled to Decatur to face Northeast Hoosier Conference foe and undefeated Bellmont team (4-0, 3-0 in NHC).

The Braves routed the Eagles 167-180 on a windy Tuesday at Cross Creek.

Bellmont had three scores less than Columbia City’s best (44). Max Dryer and Drew Burnsworth led the Eagles, each shooting a 44.

Chase Ellsworth of Bellmont was the medalist with a 37. The Braves also posted a 41,42, 47 and 48.

Dustin Parrett and Trent Murphy each got a 46. Derek Philbee rounded off Columbia City’s scoring with a 47.

Lady Eagle track downs NHC foes

COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagle track team claimed first place in 10-of-16 events Tuesday night to down Northeast Hoosier Conference foes East Noble and New Haven at the Max Gandy Athletic Field.

Columbia City racked up 75 points, outrunning East Noble, who came in second with 62 points and New Haven, who finished with 30.

The Eagles had several multiple-event winners on the blustery evening.

Col. City tennis downs Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s and Columbia City’s tennis teams not only faced each other Monday night in South Whitley, but battled gusty wind.

Columbia City beat the Lady ’Cats 5-0.

In No. 1 singles, Celene Rongos beat Whitko’s Abby Marshall 6-1, 6-0. Columbia City’s Kennedy Slavicek defeated Aressa Tackwell 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. Whitko’s Laura Hippensteel lost to Alaina Beckner 6-4, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.

Churubusco golf wins three-way

CHURUBUSCO — The Churubusco golf team won a home match Friday night against Lakewood Park and Manchester by shooting a season low 157 at Eel River Friday night. Manchester finished second with a 169 followed by Lakewood Park’s 172.

Ryan Mayer took medalist honors, carding a 38 followed by Parker Conrad’s 39, Beau Barkley and Brad Martin with 40s. Brandon Norris and Jordan Andrews also had solid rounds of 42 and 45, respectively.

The double-win makes the Eagles 5-4 on the year.

On Saturday the ’Busco golf team participated in the Lakeland Invite held at Herron Creek in Lagrange.

PIECES OF HISTORY: County museum acquires Marshall furniture

COLUMBIA CITY – After a 103-year absence, furniture believed to have belonged to Vice President Thomas R. Marshall has returned home to Whitley County.
Marshall was the 28th vice president of the United States, serving two terms under President Woodrow Wilson from 1913 to 1921.
“It just really makes the room to have this back here,” said Barb Jones, a volunteer for the museum.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION: 'Busco team wins state title

NOBLESVILLE — The Churubusco High School Destination Imagination (DI) team won the state title Saturday, and now it is going global.
CHS took two teams to the state finals in DI at Noblesville High School. Both were focused, but only one team will compete in the global finals in Knoxville, Tenn., May 23-26.

SPRING FLING: Event raises money for Task Force

COLUMBIA CITY — Thirty-seven different vendors, using 52 tables, sat in rows as the community wandered through the 4-H Center Building Sunday afternoon.
The fundraising event, Spring Fling, was held from noon to 4 p.m., to raise money for the Whitley County Domestic Violence Task Force.
Natalie Lewis, a member of the task force, said the organization was revived in 2009, and that its has regular meetings each month at Parkview Whitley Hospital which includes attorneys, the sheriff’s department, the YMCA, the Lighthouse and the task force’s board.

SALES ALL AROUND TOWN: South Whitley's annual garage sale this weekend

SOUTH WHITLEY — Springtime brings the blooming of bright colored flowers, warmer weather and the glorious sun deciding to stay out for more than one day.
In the town of South Whitley, the season also means vintage tools, rare glassware, household goods, clothes, toys, furniture and thousands of treasurers, as the legendary Garage Sale and Craft Festival is slated for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

COUNTY LEADERSHIP: Class Eleven graduates

SOUTH WHITLEY — It was a black and white affair and a full house at The Brownstone in South Whitley Thursday night as Leadership Whitley County Class Eleven celebrated its graduation.
“This is the 11th year for Leadership Whitley County,” said Kelley Sheiss, director.
“We have the distinct honor of coming out of infancy by reaching our 200th graduate. We also welcomed our youngest members, three high school seniors, and they came up with a brilliant idea of an outdoor amphitheatre.”

Douglas Smith, 47

Douglas Michael Smith, 47, Syracuse, (Dewart Lake), died at 11:40 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2012 in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
He was born Jan. 28, 1965, in Wabash to Darrell G. and Sharon K. (Flowers) Smith.
He is survived by his parents and a sister, Lynn Smith of South Whitley.
Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester.
Visitation is Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, 600 Beckley Street, North Manchester.
