KESSIE: Man gets 12 years for May gun incident

COLUMBIA CITY — A South Whitley man, 37-year-old Phillip Kessie, was sentenced to 12 years with six years to serve and six years suspended in Whitley County Circuit Court Tuesday for a gun incident that occurred in May.
According to a South Whitley Police report, Kessie was arrested May 6 after police were notified that he had been calling his wife at her sister-in-law’s residence, threatening to kill himself.

FRANKHART: Man gets 10 years for Larwill incident

COLUMBIA CITY — Thirty-year-old Michael Frankhart was sentenced to 10 years with eight years serve and two years suspended in Whitley County Circuit Court Tuesday on charges related to a Larwill gun incident in May.
Frankhart pleaded guilty Sept. 10 to possession of a firearm, a Class B felony, possession of a handgun without a permit, a Class A misdemeanor, possession of paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor an driving while suspended, a Class A misdemeanor.

POLICE SURROUND TRAILER: Multiple agencies involved, arrest suspected burglar

PIERCETON — Local sheriff’s deputies worked in concert with deputies from Kosciusko County as well as troopers from the Indiana State Police to arrest a Pierceton man wanted for theft and burglary.
According to Chad Hill, public information officer for the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, police in that county were contacted by Whitley County deputies Monday evening to help assist in the execution of an active arrest warrant for Jeremiah Smith, 26, of Pierceton.

ELECTION DAY: Nov. 6 nears, early voting begins

COLUMBIA CITY — With absentee voting officially open as of Tuesday, citizens are encouraged to vote early at the courthouse during the available scheduled hours.
Citizens may also vote early by mail with forms from the clerk’s office or by traveling board. Election Day is Nov. 6.

ZOMBIE RUN: Zombie run makes fundraising a scream

FORT WAYNE — A 5K obstacle course is taking shape on the campus of IPFW Nov. 10.
But this fundraising event is not the normal 5K run. Zombies will be invading the obstacle course to motivate runners into a frenzy.
Just Cause International, a Columbia City missions group, is hosting the run to benefit its efforts in Haiti.

WALK FOR AUTISM: Group dedicated to awareness grows in numbers, dollars

COLUMBIA CITY — In the past three months, an Autism support group has taken shape, established regular meetings, seen growth in meeting participants and after Sunday, can add a benefit walk to its list of accomplishments.
Kelly Pence is an ally for the Autism Society of Indiana. She said that the society saw the need to have local support throughout the state and instituted area allies. Pence works with counties in Northeast Indiana.

Megan Renee Lee, 33, of Fort Wayne, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at her home. Born June 5, 1979, in Columbia City, she was the daughter of Michael Kent and Linda Lou (McClure) Coulter.
A lifetime resident of Columbia City and Fort Wayne, she graduated with the class of 1997 from Columbia City High School.
She completed her education graduating from Indiana University and Indiana Purdue University earning a Master’s degree in social work.

MENTONE: Man arrested in 2 counties for bad checks

COLUMBIA CITY — Police are saying that a Mentone man’s propensity for writing bogus checks over more than 10 years has finally caught up to him.
Matthew S. Shepherd, 31, was arrested at 3:30 a.m. by Warsaw police. According to a press release by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Shepherd was wanted in that county on 15 active warrants for check deception dating back to 2001.
KCSD spokeman Sgt. Chad Hill said Shepherd is also wanted on active warrants in at least three other counties, including Whitley.
