TRIUMPHANT RETURN: Columbia City Youth Council reconvenes

COLUMBIA CITY — Nine students from Columbia City High School and Eagle Tech Academy toured City Hall before beginning a brainstorming and planning session Thursday for the inaugural meeting of the Columbia City Youth Council.
“The youth council was kind of an idea I wanted to incorporate into our government to get more of the youth voice into the planning for our future,” said Mayor Ryan Daniel. “As we’ve met today, it’s clear to me that these youths want to do more than just give a voice to their age group. It’s clear that they really want to give back in some way to the community.”

Columbia City tops Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY — Somewhere there are probably people with Whitko and Columbia City loyalties who speak kindly of each other and may even at most times be downright friendly to each other, but once the two meet in an athletic contest — no matter whether it is volleyball, basketball, or even a spirited game of tiddley winks — neither wants to be on the downhill side of the final score. Friday night the two Whitley County football rivals met at Whitko’s Ryan Huff Memorial field.

Jodie Deck, 38

Jodie Lynn Deck, 38, of rural Fort Wayne, died Thursday evening, Aug. 23, 2012. in Whitley County.
She was born Feb. 13, 1974, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Roy E. Weaver and Jayme D. McClain. Her formative years were spent in Michigan. She graduated from Wayne High School.
She was employed at Columbia City Mill.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Jacob Deck and Jesse Deck, both of Columbia City; her mother, Jayme D. Hapner of Columbia City and two brothers, Randy Weaver of Michigan and Scott Weaver of Fort Wayne.
Her father and step father, Albert Hapner, preceded her in death.

Deloris Reavis, 79

Deloris Joan Reavis, 79, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:58 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at her son’s home in rural Columbia City.
Born Dec. 5, 1932, in Columbia City, she was the daughter of William Frederick and Alta Leota (Downing) Breisch.
Raised in Whitley County, she also lived in Peru, Fort Wayne and Noble County before returning to Etna-Troy Township in 1983. She graduated from Columbia City High School with the class of 1951.

Blanche Ernst, 91

August 24, 2012

Blanche Marie Ernst, 91, of Columbia City, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor Inc., Columbia City.
Born Dec. 24, 1920 in Tallmadge, Summit County, Ohio, she was the daughter of William H. and Helen L. (Baum) Mohler.
As a young child, she lived in Ohio. She graduated from Coesse High School where she played on the girls basketball team.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Whitley Co. moves from extreme to severe

COLUMBIA CITY — While the grass is a vibrant green, and it has even become long enough for Whitley County residents to use their lawn mowers, the drought is still far from over according to experts.
“It’s eased a little bit,” said David Addison, Purdue Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development. “We went from being in an extreme drought to being in a severe drought.”
The four levels of drought are moderate, severe, extreme and exceptional.

WGU, SDI embark on partnership

INDIANAPOLIS — Western Governors University Indiana has selected Steel Dynamics, Inc. as the first northern Indiana employer to promote bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the state’s nonprofit, online university.
The announcement pairs Indiana’s eighth state university with the nation’s fifth-largest steel company, which has a division in Columbia City.
“Steel Dynamics is home to 6,500-plus associates, many of whom will be served by our partnership with WGU Indiana,” said Steel Dynamics President and CEO Mark Millett.

Squawbuck Days starts Friday

LARWILL — A tenderloin fry at the fire department’s headquarters in Larwill today, which begins at 4 p.m., will mark the official beginning of Larwill’s annual festival, Squawbuck Days, which runs until the 11 a.m. carry-in lunch on Sunday.
The 158th anniversary of the town-wide festival is sponsored by the Larwill Fire Department, Lions Club and Richland Township Community Association.
A town-wide garage sale will take place during the weekend as well as a car show.

Terry Farber, 61

August 24, 2012

Terry L. Farber, 61, of Columbia City, died at 5:54 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at his home. He had been in failing health.
He was born Aug. 25, 1950, at the Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake, a son of Lawrence E. and Ruby L. (Hearld) Farber.
A member of the class of 1968 from Columbia City High School, he graduated from IPFW with a degree in Engineering.
On June 15, 1967, he was united in marriage to Marold A. Jackson. They have always made their home in the Columbia City area, moving to their present home in 1996.

Lois Baker, 91

August 24, 2012

Lois Evelyn Baker, 91, of Columbia City, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Parkview Oaks, Columbia City.
Born Oct. 16, 1920, in Columbia City, she was the daughter of Charles C. and Eletha M. (Egolf) Nichols.
She has resided her entire life in the Whitley County area, attending Thorncreek Center Elementary School and Columbia City High School.
On March 22, 1947, she married Ralph E. Baker in Syracuse. She worked at Gripco, South Whitley, and retired April 1983, after 21 years of service as a shipping clerk.
