GRADUATION: County graduation ceremonies set for June 8

Area high schools are gearing up for graduation.

The county’s three high schools will all conduct commencement ceremonies on Friday, June 8.

Columbia City High School’s graduation will be held in the gymnasium at 6 p.m.

Churubusco Jr.-Sr. High School will honor graduates at 7 p.m.
Whitko High School’s graduation will be at 7:30 p.m.

NEON GUMMI BEARS: DI team shines at globals

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Churubusco Jr.-Sr. High School Destination ImagiNation (DI) has made school and state history. The team won the prestigious Renaissance Award at the Global Finals of DI 2012.

Members of the team, The Neon Gummi Bears, are seniors Robby Pope, Brandi Herron and Caitie Eakins; juniors Jenna Shambaugh and Avery Derr and sophomore Rachel Jones. They are coached by Julie Mast and Dena Pope.

DI is a nonprofit organization that provides educational programs for students to learn and experience creativity, teamwork and problem solving.

Poyser named Player of the Week

Churubusco’s Kody Poyser put in his best effort to keep the team’s baseball season alive.

In the Eagles’ sectional opener against Eastside, Poyser hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning to win the game.

In the sectional semi-final game, Churubusco was down by a run in the last inning, Poyser hit a two RBI single with two outs to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.

Despite Poyser’s efforts, ’Busco lost to South Adams by a walk-off single.

William Hullinger, 81

William F. Hullinger, 81, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at the V.A. Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
Born July 10, 1930, in Decatur, he worked as a Tool & Die Maker for Zollner Piston 34 years retiring in 1988.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of American Legion Post 82, VFW #2457 New Haven, the Marine Corps League, Devil Dogs, and Korean War Veterans.

Stephen Abshire, 65

COLUMBIA CITY — Stephen J. Abshire, 65, a resident of Columbia City and formerly of Churubusco, died at 3:14 p.m. Monday, May 21, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
He was born March 28, 1947, in Bloomington, a son of Roy E. and Dorthea L. (Stagg) Abshire.
Survivors include his wife Bonita (Romine) Abshire; two daughters Corina Fletcher of Hartford City and Linda Law of Washington, W.Va.; a step-son, Jamey Abshire of Westfield; his mother-in-law, Edith M. Romine of Knapp Lake; a sister-in-law, Linda Barrett of Churubusco; a nephew and seven grandchildren.

Kay Boardman, 67

COLUMBIA CITY — Kay C. Boardman, 67, formerly of Waco, Ky., died at 1:50 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Renaissance Village.
She was born Dec. 31, 1944, in Lafayette, a daughter of Wayne and Ada (Schuman) Griffin.
On June 11, 1966, she married Bobby V. Boardman.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby; three children, Rob Boardman of Richmond, Ky., Rhonda Stover of North Manchester, Rod Boardman of Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adele Murdick of Franklin and Dianne Stout of Trafalgar.

Lonzo Howard, 74

PIERCETON — Lonzo Howard, 74, Pierceton, died at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012, in his residence.
He was born Sept. 10, 1937, in Salyersville, Ky. to Bass and Dollie (Allen) Howard.
On June 27, 1959, he married Alice J. Herendeen.
He is survived by his wife, Alice J. Howard, Pierceton; one son, Michael W. Howard, South Whitley; one grandson; two brothers, Rosco Howard, Pierceton and Monroe Howard, Printer, Ky. and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sammy Howard and Cisco Howard, and two sisters, Arizona Mullins and Betty Allen.

Rosalee Bernhard, 73

WARSAW — Rosalee A. “Rosie” Bernhard, 73, formerly of South Whitley, died at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Warsaw where she had been a resident since July, 2011.
She was born Sept. 25, 1938, in Kokomo, a daughter of Howard E. and Nina M. (Norman) Murphy.
Her formative years were spent in Warsaw and she graduated from Warsaw High School in 1956.
On Dec. 3, 1958, she was united in marriage to Robert D. Bernhard. They always made their home in South Whitley. Mr. Bernhard died March 26, 2003.

Richard Murphy, 61

Richard Murphy, 61, of Churubusco, died at 11:07 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2012, at I.U. Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born June 17, 1950, in Fort Wayne, a son of Richard Wells and Ruth (Parker) Murphy.
He served in the U.S. Army, spending one year in Vietnam.
On July 31, 1971, he married Cheryl Dray. She survives.
