Rosemary Lowen, 78

March 14, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — Rosemary L. Lowen, 78, of Columbia City, passed away at 11 p.m. Monday at Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home in Columbia City.
She was born May 5, 1933, in Muncie, the daughter of Kenneth W. and Edrie M. (Russell) Carney.
She attended South Side High School in Fort Wayne. She married Howard E. Lowen, Sr. in Fort Wayne on Oct. 4, 1952.
She and her family moved from Fort Wayne to Columbia City in 1967. She was a homemaker and member of the United Methodist Church.

Young athlete finishes fourth at the Elks hoop shoot state finals

Olivia Shearer, daughter of Columbia City Girls Basketball Head Coach Amy Shearer and former Churubusco athlete Chad Shearer, was the sole local hoopster to advance to the Elks Hoop-Shoot Indiana State Finals. Shearer placed fourth in her age group (age 10-11) at New Castle.

SPRING CLEANING: Courthouse getting refreshed

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Courthouse’s exterior is getting a spring cleaning. Talks began while maintenance employees were prepping for a heating and cooling project to the courthouse, but brought the new project to the Commissioners’ attention, sensing urgency.

“Both Mark and I feel that this project is probably more important,” said Denny Fenker, courthouse maintenance.

COLUMBIA CITY — There was some serious fun during a fundraiser at Columbia City High School Friday night. Ryan Romanowski was crowned 2012 Mr. CCHS and appeared to enjoy the title.

Edward Weber, 99

March 12, 2012

Edward Eugene Weber, 99, of Columbia City, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012, at his son’s home in Kosciusko County.
Born Sept. 20, 1912, in Larwill, he was the son of Jacob Weber and Ada Solt-Weber-Hamilton.
Following the death of his mother, Edward was reared in Larwill by his aunt and uncle, Albert and Hulda Solt Holycross and has lived most of his adult life in Columbia City.
He attended Larwill, Fort Wayne, and Columbia City schools.
On Dec. 17, 1941, he married Inez Elizabeth Smith at Columbia City United Methodist Church.

James Adams, 62

James Timothy Adams, 62, passed away on Friday, March 9, 2012, at his home in Texas.
He was born on Sept. 4, 1949, a son of Porter Jackson and June (Miller) Adams and graduated from Larwill High School in 1967.
Jim served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Vietnam.
He worked at Dana Corporation until his retirement.

Fred Swindell, 80

CHURUBUSCO — Fred Delmar Swindell, 80, passed away Friday, March 9, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne after a brief illness.
He lived in Churubusco for the last 35 years.
Born in LaPorte Dec 19, 1931, to the late Daniel W. Swindell and Dorothy E. (Dilts) Swindell, he lived most of his early life in Idaville where he graduated from high school.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War serving most of his time on the U.S.S. Essex.
He worked in several occupations including agriculture, high steel structures, restaurant management, law enforcement and sheet metal.

Susan Adams, 54

Susan Amy Adams, 54, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:29 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Born Nov. 29, 1957, in Columbia City, she was the daughter of H. Wesley and Madonna Rose (Martz) Adams.
She lived in Allen and Whitley counties her entire lifetime and had a family cottage at Tri Lakes since 1957.
She graduated from Elmhurst High School with the class of 1976 and received an associate’s degree in accounting from Fort Wayne International Business College.
She worked at the world headquarters of Do It Best Hardware in New Haven, as an accountant.

Marian Hanish, 88

COLUMBIA CITY — Marian M. Hanish, 88, of rural Columbia City, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor.
She was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Allen County, a daughter of William and Lucy (Summers) Fulk.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Roxanne L. Schulze of Cold Spring, Texas; a son, Brian R. (Lisa) Bowers of Columbia City; two grandchildren, Amanda Schmidt and Sylas Bowers; and two great-granddaughters, Faith and Ella Schmidt; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Fulk of Laotto.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Cliff Fulk, Hugh Fulk and Robert Fulk.
