City's pool still a hot topic

COLUMBIA CITY — With the Burnworth Memorial Pool now closed for the season, pool manager Phil Stanczak provided park board members a financial update on the pool at Monday evening’s meeting.
“I had a good year except for the start was a little bit rocky because obviously the issue with the pump which we ultimately got fixed, but we only lost a day or two,” Stanczak said.

Burkett films Whitley County

John Burkett, of Columbia City, did exactly that two weeks ago – and it’s already had more than 1,000 hits on his web site.

Warsaw man killed in early Sun. a.m. crash

LARWILL — A Whitko graduate is dead after a fatal crash early Sunday morning.
Jeremiah Setser, 20, of southeast Warsaw, who graduated from Whitko High School in 2009, rolled his truck at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday near Larwill.
Whitley County Sheriff Department deputies arrived on the scene to an upside-down 1992 Dodge truck covered with live electrical wires.

Retiring from dentistry; hearing a higher calling

CHURUBUSCO — The couple has been in dentistry together since 1975 — and with retirement looming, they are answering a higher calling.
Dr. Russ and Lois Gilliom met in college while taking organic chemistry class at Ball State University. After the couple got married they entered the world of dentistry.

Security cameras to scan parks in South Whitley

SOUTH WHITLEY — Video monitoring will improve security for South Whitley’s town parks and their visitors in the near future.
A four-channel security camera system was approved by the town council Tuesday evening for Gale Hagan Memorial Park and South Whitley Town Park with SDS Communications and DVS Security submitting bids.

WCCS boasts stellar report card

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated Schools received its second consecutive “A” for the 2010-2011 school year.
All elementary schools in the country are graded by the “No Child Left Behind” federal law. WCCS elementary schools: Mary Raber, Northern Heights, Coesse and Little Turtle all got an “A” for their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
There are no signs posted in the hallways, but Julie Turpin, principal of Mary Raber Elementary School is celebrating.

Arlene Anderson, 72

CANDLER FLA. — Arlene Anderson, 72 of Candler, Fla. passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2011 at Tuscany House Hospice in Summerfield, Fla.
She was born Aug. 3, 1938 in Amline, Ohio and moved to Candler, Fla. in 1979 from Port Charlotte, Fla.
She attended Faith Baptist Church and was a great supporter of mission work.
She and her husband were members of the Goldwing Riders Association.
Arlene loved sewing, cooking, traveling, camping, water skiing and boating, but most of all she loved spending time with her loving family and friends.

Hazel Rathbun, 101

Hazel Marie Rathbun, 101, of Columbia City, passed away at 7:25 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011 at The Oaks, Columbia City.
Born Oct. 5, 1909 in Thorncreek Township, she was the daughter of Frank and Desta Fidela (Ummel) Kneller.
She was educated in the public schools of Thorncreek Township and Columbia City.
On April 28, 1928, she married J. Lewis Rathbun south of Collamer.
Mr. Rathbun preceded her in death Oct. 1, 1988.

Jeremiah Setser, 20

August 29, 2011

Jeremiah James Setser, 20, passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011 at 12:58 a.m. as the result of an automobile accident in Whitley County.
He was born March 30, 1991 in Columbia City.
The son of Darvin D. and Mary (Hite) Setser, he was a 2009 graduate of Whitko High School.
Jeremiah enjoyed life in general, but he especially enjoyed being an active participant in truck pulls, working on trucks and when younger, horseback riding.
He had a good sense of humor. Jeremiah was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
