Poll respondents on the home page of www.thepostandmail.com have predicted Churubusco High School's football team "to have the best won-loss record" in the county by the end of the football season. Churubusco received 55% of the votes, Columbia City High School 35% and Whitko High School 10%.

School has started for Whitley Countyâ€™s three school districts â€” Whitley County Consolidated Schools, Smith-Green Community Schools and Whitko Community Schools. As the battle for the best deal on back-to-school items plays out for parents in retail establishments, school administrators are waging war each day to fight for education dollars.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” The Drug Task Force made a presentation at the Columbia City Common Council meeting Tuesday on the dangers of methamphetamine, its origins, how it is made and why it has become a big problem.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” An amendment was passed on first reading in regards to city golf cart permits at the Columbia City Common Council meeting Tuesday. It will be moved to a second reading at the next meeting Sept. 11.
With the county recently adopting an ordinance, Columbia City Police Chief Tim Longenbaugh said the cityâ€™s regulations state that those who operate golf carts in the city must have a city permit.
â€śI thought the golf carts could have some kind of a placard or decal that the permit holders could attach to the golf cart,â€ť said Longenbaugh.

Marlene Joyce Green, 73, a resident of Churubusco, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Millerâ€™s Merry Manor in Columbia City.
Ms. Green was born on Sept. 22, 1938, in Matoon, Ill., a daughter of Joe and Geneva Louise (Thompson) Fulk.
She was a member of the ladies auxiliaries of both the Churubusco Veteranâ€™s of Foreign Wars Turtle Post 3846 and the Gilbert Davis American Legion Post 157 in Churubusco.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Mayor Ryan Daniel recently announced a new citizen engagement component for Columbia City, making it easy for citizens to stay connected to information concerning the city.
â€śWe are one of the few communities in the state to have something like this,â€ť said Daniel.
â€śRight now the (computer application) is only for the iPhone and iPad, but the Droid may be an option in the future as we see how this pans out.â€ť
According to a press release, the computer application, also known as an â€śapp,â€ť was recently designed by Austin Drummond, a Huntington University student.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” The authority to grant Columbia City residents permission to shoot off fireworks in the city was transferred from one governing body to another this week.
An amendment was passed on second reading concerning the cityâ€™s Fireworks Ordinance at the Columbia City Common Council meeting Tuesday.
Mayor Ryan Daniel said the ordinance had strict standards as to only allowing citizens to use fireworks on specific days in the year.
â€śThis ordinance, first of all allows the Board of Works to set forth any additional dates, like this year when we had the burn ban,â€ť said Daniel.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Whitley County rivals Churubusco and Columbia City met on the volleyball court at the Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium Tuesday night, treating the fans in attendance to a very competitive match.
Visiting Churubusco took the first game with a very emotional performance, but host Columbia City regrouped to take the next three games to record the 3-1 win.
The win pushes the Columbia City record to 4-0 as they head into Thursday nightâ€™s showdown with Concordia, while Churubuscoâ€™s record moves to 3-3 as they head to Eastside also on Thursday.
