Pierceton Elementary wraps up girls hoops season

The Pierceton Elementary fourth and fifth grade girls recently completed their basketball season. The girls were coached by Mrs. Angie Trump and Mr. Brent Messmore.

DEER NUMBERS DOWN, BUT ONLY SLIGHTLY: Population remains steady

COLUMBIA CITY — With the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) releasing its annual deer harvest report, one local conservation expert compared Whitley County numbers to state statistics.

Though the 129,018 deers bagged was down from the previous year, it was still the fourth best season the state has seen. In 2010, numbers neared 5,000 more deer, however, the 134,004 harvested deer was the state’s all-time record.

METH LAB IN NOBLE COUNTY: Police arrest two men near Rome City

ROME CITY — An alert off-duty police officer jogging near Rome City called for backup Sunday when he smelled chemicals coming from a home. As a result of his actions, two Noble County men are in custody today, charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, according to area news reports.
According to police, Chris Moriarity, an off-duty police officer, called a fellow sheriff's deputy when he smelled chemicals coming from a home near Rome City.

BREAKING REGIONAL NEWS UPDATE: Coroner identifies body floating in Fort Wayne River

FORT WAYNE — The Allen County Coroner reports the body found floating in the St. Marys River Saturday morning was that of a homeless man, according to area news reports.
The coroner said Gary Brant, 40, drowned. His body was discovered near the old Wells Street Bridge Saturday morning by a fisherman, according to police.
The coroner ruled the death an accident.
Area news reports said Brant was homeless and had a little camp set up near where his body was found.
Emergency officials used a rescue boat to retrieve Brant's body from the river.

BREAKING REGIONAL NEWS: Body found floating in Fort Wayne river

March 31, 2012

Fort Wayne police were called Saturday morning to the old Wells Street Bridge in Fort Wayne with a report of a body floating in the river.
According to a police report, a 911 call was received from a fisherman who saw the body floating in the water.
Officer’s arrived along with the Fort Wayne Fire Departments water rescue squad. The fire department, with the use of their boat, were able to secure the body on the north shore line. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, along with the Allen County Coroner’s Office, were contacted and assumed responsibility over the investigation.

WHITKO'S WILLIAM TELLS: WMS archers shine at state competition

COLUMBIA CITY — After Whitko’s archery team competed at the state level March 16, the team came came back with a Team Spirit Award, as well as having a student, Cody Gardner, place fourth in his division. The tournament was held at the Verizon Center in Muncie.
“It’s the second time they’ve won the Spirit Award for the school in the state, they’ve got a lot of school spirit with these kids,” said Coach Bill Green.

Indian Springs Middles School wrestlers finished their season with second place finishes in the conference meet.

Easter Egg Hunt April 7
An Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Tri Lakes Baptist Church Saturday, April 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 am.
The event is for any child between the ages of three and the fifth grade.
Activities will consist of game time, story time, puppets, Egg Roll and an Egg Hunt. Bags will be provided for each child.
Also, there may be a special appearance by a very large chicken. The event is free of charge.

’Busco boys, C.C. girls win county meet

COLUMBIA CITY — Churubusco’s boys and Columbia City’s girls won the Eel River Rivalry track meet Thursday night at Columbia City.

Churubusco won the boys meet by 17 points over Whitko and 23 points over Columbia City (69-52-46).

Columbia City’s girls defeated Churubusco by 13 points and Whitko by 33 (71-58-38).

2012 BUDGET IS BACK: WCCS hears report and plans for 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated School Director of Business and Operations Tony Zickgraf gave a report to WCCS board members on the finalized 2012 budget last week. Though the budget was approved by the board itself late in 2011, there is a lengthy proposal and adjustment process it must go through with the state before receiving a final approval; thus, an early 2012 time-frame is not uncommon.

Zickgraf’s report provided all the numbers and focused on the comparison between 2012 and 2011.
