'RACHEL'S CHALLENGE ACCEPTED': 'Busco kids, parents and teachers show kindness

CHURUBUSCO — Kindness is apparent around Churubusco, as hundreds of Smith-Green Community School children, teachers and parents have accepted Rachel’s Challenge, showing acts of kindness everyday.

Three banners with hundreds of signatures written on them will be visible as people enter the schools of SGCS. The signatures came after Bill Sanders spoke all day Friday during Rachel’s Challenge. Sanders is the author of the program directly inspired by Rachel Scott who died along with 12 others in the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Littleton near Denver, Colo.

State Representatives Dan Leonard (left) of the 50th District, and Kathy Heuer (right) of the 83rd District, present a resolution to Parkview Whitley Hospital staff and nurses in recognition of the hospital receiving the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) Award for Outstanding Nursing Quality for a Community Hospital in the year 2011. Don Alvey, 84

Don Alvey, 84, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, at his home.
Born March 10, 1928, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of John and Bessie (Hanshew) Alvey.
He attended Fort Wayne Schools. He resided in Fort Wayne until moving to Columbia City in 1958.
On July 29, 1977 he married Arola L. Boese at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, New Haven.
He always worked in Fort Wayne where he was employed at Summit City News and then at Blue Flame Gas Company and in 1982, he retired from Pyrofax.

Joel Harris, V, 65

Joel S. Harris, V, 65, of Columbia City, died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at his residence.
Born May 19, 1946, in Falls Church, Va., he was the son of Joel S. and Isabel (Clark) Harris, IV.
He served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War
On Sept. 13, 1976, he married Sheila McCann in Fort Wayne.

Legislature honors Argerbright, Lefever

COLUMBIA CITY – Former Whitley County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) board members John Lefever and Jim Argerbright were recently honored for their service to economic development in Whitley County with Special Resolutions from the Indiana General Assembly. The Resolutions were sponsored by State Representative Kathy Heuer and State Senator Jim Banks.

TALENT ON DISPLAY IN PHOTO: Whitko hosts fourth annual show

Whitko Middle School’s cafeteria was the site of the school’s fourth annual talent show Friday night. Above, left to right are contestants Rozlyn Bishop, fifth grade, Amanda Zinsmeister, seventh grade and seventh-grader Maddy Foutz. The event was sponsored by the WMS Peacekeepers program and organized by Tara Hosier. With 20 different talents, the categories included singing, variety and dance. Aside from offering students a chance to showcase their talents and entertain the crowd, all proceeds from the event went to the Peacekeeper Program.

Ilamae Hinricks, 71

March 26, 2012

Ilamae Hinricks , 71, of Fort Wayne, died at 5 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
She was born March 1, 1941, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Jesse Hartzog and Helen (Seitner) Richadrson.
On Sept. 7, 1974, she was married in Fort Wayne to Ronald G. Hinrichs. He preceded her in death Jan. 28, 2006.
Surviving relatives her include twin sister, Ilarae Cunningham of Fort Wayne; a brother-in-law, Arthur Hinrichs of Howe, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her father.
By the request of the family, there will be no services.

Pamela Smith, 60

March 26, 2012

Pamela Smith, 60, of Albion, passed away at 6:05 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Wesley Healthcare in Auburn.
Mrs. Smith was born April 8, 1951, in Gary, a daughter of Leroy and Isabell (Zigler) Mason.
She spent her formative years in Gary.
On Aug. 28, 1999, she was married in the yard of their Albion home to Curtis Lee Smith.

Larwill man hurt in wkd. collision

March 26, 2012

A Larwill man was one of two men involved in a Saturday morning crash on Ind. 109, according to the Noble County Sheriff’s Department.
Shawn Sproles, 21, of Larwill collided head-on with Bradley Kincaid, 19, of Albion, according to police who reported the two drivers attempted to avoid a collision.
The crash occurred in the northbound lane.
Sproles was driving in the southbound lane.
A helicopter was dispatched to take Kincaid to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne with possible head injuries. Sproles was transported to Parkview Whitley Hospital for leg injuries.

NEW LIGHT FOR COESSE: School gets new windows

COLUMBIA CITY — Following many years of minor problems, Coesse Middle School is close to replacing the windows above the gymnasium.
Tony Zickgraf, business and operations manager for Whitley County Consolidated Schools, said that in the 17 years he has worked for the district, attempts have been made to seal the leaks, all of which were unsuccessful.
Zickgraf said the type of windows currently installed are translucent fiberglass designed to let light in, however the most recent investigation shows due to weather conditions the glass is beginning to wear.
