Columbia City swimmer headed for state

WARSAW — The Warsaw girls swimming sectional finals took place Saturday, and Columbia City Lady Eagle Libby Bower had been here before.
As a freshman and sophomore, Bower finished second in 100-yard butterfly consolation races.

Her junior year, she finished fifth in the sectional final to determine the state tourney representative, missing her trip to the finals by four places. Saturday, the senior again improved upon her previous efforts, taking first place and taking her first trip to Indianapolis with a time of 1:06.27.

PRINCESSES: Father-Daughter Dance held Friday

COLUMBIA CITY — Princesses and Prince Charmings were all the rage on Friday night in Columbia City. Hundreds of fathers and daughters attended the seventh annual Father Daughter Dance at First Church of God Friday night. The event was sponsored by Columbia City Parks and several area businesses.
The dads dressed in their finest and daughters, looking like princesses, were able to get their portraits taken by a local photographer. A catered dinner by Jill Daniel featured a crowd favorite, macaroni and cheese.

SEMI-STATE: Three county wrestlers advance in tournament

HUNTERTOWN — The season goes on for all three Whitley County wrestling teams as Columbia City, Churubusco and Whitko each qualified a wrestler for next Saturday’s IHSAA Wrestling Semi-State.

Columbia City’s Russell Hazelet qualified with a fourth-place finish at 182 pounds and Churubusco freshman Chase Downing advanced by placing fourth in the 120-pound weight class. Whitko senior Cody Bays will represent the Wildcats by way of a third-place finish at 145 pounds.

'Busco girls fall to Lakeland

CHURUBUSCO — The Lady Eagles basketball team opened a boy-girl double-header with a loss Friday, falling to the visiting Lady Lakers of Lakeland, 49-44.

In the first quarter, Lakeland jumped out to an early lead off of consecutive scores from Abi Thompson. After a foul shot from Thompson the Lady Eagles found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-0 deficit three minutes into the game.

Thompson scored again for Lakeland, but it was the last basket the Lady Lakers would score in the opening period.

Savannah Labenz scored four straight points to give Churubusco the lead.

Gruettert makes history for Columbia City diving

WARSAW – Columbia City High School started its swim program 15 years ago. Assistant Coach Phil Stanczak has been around for nearly all of them.

“In my 14 years of doing this, I’ve never seen that happen,” said Stanczak. “That” being sending an Eagle diver – boy or girl – to the state regional tournament.

That changed Saturday. Lady Eagle diver junior Audrey Gruettert finished in the top four at the Warsaw sectional, advancing her to regionals Tuesday. Gruettert’s 306.7 score placed her in fourth.

“I’m very excited; still kind of in shock,” Gruettert said.

IRWIN REACHES 2,000 POINTS: Whitko guard hits milestone

SOUTH WHITLEY — Since Logan Irwin was a young boy his father Rob knew he was going to be a good basketball player. What Rob didn’t know, however, is just how good his son would be.

Logan joined the top scorers in the state after surpassing his 2,000th point Friday night in Whitko’s home game against North Miami. The sharp-shooter’s 27 points lifted his career scoring to 2,015 and helped the Wildcats to a 85-62 win over the Warriors.

Logan’s mom, Krista, said she felt the same as Rob — nervous.

'Busco boys defeat Lakeland Friday

CHURUBUSCO — The crowd in Churubusco, having just watched a Lady Eagle loss to Lakeland, watched its boys team return the favor to the Lakers in the second contest of the ‘Busco-hosted double-header by a score of 47-44.

In the first eight minutes, the score was knotted at two, four and nine. Eagles Smith, Austin Goepfrich, Dylan Jones and Josh LeFever all scored, as did Lakers Tim Abbott, Cody Richardson and Jalen King. King hit from long range as the buzzer sounded to even the score at 9-9.

Tied at 13, Lakeland went on a tear, notching nine of the next 12 points.

IANG: Mission change coming for 122nd fighter wing.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — The Department of Defense is planning a mission change for Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne.

An area newspaper reports the wing’s A-10 jets will be replaced by MC-12 aircraft, a medium- to low-altitude, twin-engine turboprop aircraft with a primary mission is providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support directly to ground forces.

Five bases that fly the A-10 Warthogs, including Fort Wayne’s, are slated to lose those squadrons as the Pentagon transitions to the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS: LTES hosting those touring for autism

COLUMBIA CITY — A local elementary school will host international visitors who are touring the United States studying how best to educate children with autism.

Little Turtle Elementary School in Columbia City, along with Creek Side Middle School in Carmel will host the guests for the entire day Wednesday, according to a Whitley County Consolidated School Corporation press release.

Phyllis Richardson, 93

Phyllis Peabody Bates Richardson, 93, passed away on Jan. 20, 2012.
Phyllis was born in 1918 to Jack and Carrie Peabody.
Following college, She married Robert C. Bates and resided in Columbia City until his death. She then moved to Arizona and married Harry E. Richardson in 1978.
Phyllis is survived by three children, Robert C. Bates of Arizona, Susan Bates Kyler of North Carolina, Joanne Bates Flynn of California, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her late husband, Harry E. Richardson. Private services were held in Arizona.
