Geneva Myers, 90

March 11, 2011

Geneva E. Myers, 90, loving mother, grandmother and friend passed away quietly at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 8:25 p.m.
She was born Sept. 25, 1920 in Cleveland Township to the late Gerald R. and Jennie (Williamson) Lancaster. She spent her formative years in South Whitley and graduated from South Whitley High School.
On Dec. 5, 1949 she was united in marriage to Willard “Blackie” Myers. They ran the Mobil service station in South Whitley. Mr. Myers died Feb. 26, 1977.

Gotta Dance!

“It keeps me young and it keeps me going,” says Deb Aldrich, a grandmother of nine.
What she’s referring to is dance.
Called “Dancin’ Aunt Deb” by her family, she has been kicking up her heels since she was a little girl. Her mom started her in dance classes at the age of four.
She was a regular on the Ann Colone Show on WANE-TV in Fort Wayne and in 1959 performed with Gene Barry, who portrayed Bat Masterson on television, during the Shrine Horse Patrol in Columbia City.

House in Larwill razed for higher purpose

LARWILL — A Victorian Italianate-style brick house, built in 1880 in Larwill was razed Thursday.
Property owner Bob Vandermark of Larwill watched as Jeff Wigent of Wigent Excavating worked the excavator making short work of the job. What was a house at 116 N. Center Street in the morning, was level ground by 5 p.m.
“There was so much black mold, it wasn’t worth fixing,” Vandermark said.
He had purchased the house with an idea of restoration, but the mold issue changed his plans.

Jeanne Short, 68

Jeanne A. Short, 68, a resident of Fort Wayne, passed away at 3:58 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born April 20, 1942 in Connersville, a daughter of Kenneth R. and Catherine (Lunsford) Klein.
She was a member of the Huntertown United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her children, Todd Short, and Lisa Lucio; her stepmother Rosalyn Klein; four brothers, Bill Klein, Donald Klein, Kevin Klein, and Craig Klein.

Phyllis Nelson, 76

Phyllis A. Nelson, 76, a resident of Dunfee, died Wednesday afternoon, March 9, 2011 in the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home.
She was born Jan. 4, 1935 in Arcola, a daughter of Frank and Martha Felger Butts. Her formative years were spent on the family farm near Arcola. After graduating from the Arcola High School, she was first employed as a secretary for the Allen County Extension Office and later was the registrar at Homestead High School for 32 years.
On June 7, 1957, she was united in marriage to John R. Nelson and they have spent their married life in the Fort Wayne area.

Mary Yeager, 92

Mary G. Yeager, 92, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Syracuse.
She was born in Columbia City Dec. 16, 1918 to the late Eldon and Maud (Egner) Barsh. She married Richard L. Yeager May 14, 1938. He preceded her in death March 31, 2001.
Mary worked 34 years at Gripco in South Whitley, retiring in 1982. She enjoyed her travels to Hawaii, bowling and playing bingo.

4-H Inc. prepares for upcoming events

COLUMBIA CITY — Tuesday evening’s 4-H Inc. board meeting was the last for Kay Walter, secretary at the Whitley County Purdue Extension Office. She has voluntarily taken minutes for the organization, though the board does elect a secretary, this year being Dave Rupley.
Rupley asked what was to happen at the next board meeting and was told, “Bring two pens.”
Offers to Walter to continue her duties even after her retirement date, March 18, were met with a smile, and a polite but firm refusal.
“It doesn’t get much better than Kay,” said Rex Eiler, boardmember.

Jason Tester, 36

Jason Warren Tester, 36, of Fort Wayne, passed away at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at his home. Born Aug. 13, 1974 in Columbia City, he was a son of Randy Dow and Deborah Sue (Bender) Tester.
He lived in Allen and Whitley Counties, graduating from Homestead High School with the Class of 1994. An avid cook, he worked at several local restaurants. In his spare time, he loved to hunt and fish.

Patricia Nicodemus, 57

March 11, 2011

Patricia Ann “Patty” Nicodemus, 57, of Columbia City, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne. Born in Wolf Lake, May 29, 1953 she was a daughter of Roderick C. and Martha Jane (Friskney) Johnson.

Richard V. Reed, 86

March 11, 2011

Richard V. “RV” Reed, 86, former principal of Whitko High School, died at his home in South Whitley at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2011. He had been in failing health.
He was born Oct. 5, 1924 in South Bend, a son of Vern W. and Mary (Tyndall) Reed. His formative years were spent in Spencerville and he graduated from St. Joe High School. He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture/chemistry. He completed his masters of education degree at Ball State University.
