Bellinger named OSD grand marshal

June 23, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Mike Bellinger has been chosen as the grand marshal of the American Legion Parade at Old Settlers Days for 2011.
The parade begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday from North Street down Main Street. It will be followed by the Mizpah Shrine’s Parade of Lights.

Whitko board OKs new discipline plan

PIERCETON — The Whitko Community School Corporation (WCSC) board of school trustees approved a discipline plan which was presented by Whitko High School (WHS) vice-principal David Parker and social studies teacher Kathy Longenbaugh at this week’s board meeting.
Mandated by the Indiana Department of Education, the corporation-wide discipline plan is being developed to improve student behavior and discipline. A committee has been organized by WCSC in order to implement a plan.

Professor, Illinois couple discuss wind energy pitfalls

COLUMBIA CITY — Indian Springs Middle School’s auditorium clamored with government officials and Whitley County citizens Tuesday night as a presentation, organized by the Whitley County Concerned Citizens, shed light on the issue of bringing mass-produced wind power to the area.
“We want to listen to both sides of the issue,” said Nick Stanger from the podium as he introduced the evening’s first speaker, Professor Roger McEowen from Iowa State University.

Mailbox baseball puts trio in jail

June 22, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Three men were arrested Tuesday morning after vandalizing the northwest area of Whitley County.
At approximately 6 a.m., the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department reported receiving a call about people in a white Ford Taurus striking mailboxes with a baseball bat.

Kay Fleck receives OSD Red Coat honor

COLUMBIA CITY — If you saw red Tuesday night it wasn’t your imagination. It was the Old Setters Day Association’s annual dinner for past presidents and their guests at the Eagle’s Nest Event Center.
Jacie Worrick, 2011 OSD president, welcomed the room full of people wearing their red coats, the honor bestowed upon honorees selected by their peers when they become part of the OSD board of directors.

Pierceton Elementary gets new principal

PIERCETON — The Whitko Community School Corporation’s Board of School Trustees was introduced to Eric Speicher, Pierceton Elementary School’s new principal, at the board’s regular meeting Monday.
Speicher will replace Barb Ihnen who is resigning effective June 30.

Driver leaves crash; caught by ISP

June 21, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Indiana State Police responded Friday evening to a single-car accident at U.S. 30 and CR 100 S. in Whitley County. According to ISP Public Information Officer Ron Galaviz, a call was made at about 11:30 p.m. Friday reporting the crash and reporting that the driver had left the scene.

S. Whitley latest stop for EDC’s Tio

SOUTH WHITLEY — Alan Tio, Whitley County Economic Development Corporation’s president, attended the South Whitley town council meeting June 14 and provided an overview of last year, along with priorities, future activities and budget updates.
“We (EDC) are doing more than ever before,” Tio said. “Our marketing budget will increase next year and we are also looking to add to our staff area.”

Local dot-com receives CEDIT loan

COLUMBIA CITY — Local software development company SubdivisionINFO.com announced Monday it is launching a proprietary web solution for home buyers in new markets in 2011.
The company anticipates adding three employees immediately and up to 25-30 employees by 2013 to support its expansion, according to a press release from the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation.
