LADY EAGLES: Tennis picks up two NHC wins

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s Lady Eagle tennis team downed Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Bellmont and perennial conference powerhouse, Homestead, in two matches this week at the DeVol Field courts.

Thursday night, the Eagles used wins at No. 3 singles and both doubles matches to down NHC powerhouse Homestead by a 3-2 score.

COLUMBIA CITY — Homestead pitcher Bailey Waugh came within one batter of pitching a perfect game against the host Columbia City Eagles. The Spartans used Waugh’s solid pitching, seven stolen bases and four Columbia City errors to hand the Eagles a 10-0 Northeast Hoosier Conference loss Thursday evening.

DERAILED: ’Busco boys tracksters dominate Garrett

GARRETT — Churubusco’s boys and girls track teams traveled to Garrett for a dual meet with the Railroaders. In a set of mixed results, the Lady Eagles fell to their Garrett counterparts 69-63, while the boys dominated the Railroaders, winning by a 108-24 score.

For the Lady Eagles, Julia Folland was a double-winner taking both the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run.

11 to 8: Lady Eagles fall to Homestead

FORT WAYNE — Down 10-3 after four innings, a Columbia City rally fell just short, as the Lady Eagles fell 11-8 to host Homestead in a Northeast Hoosier Conference softball contest.

Homestead jumped in front, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Spartans’ Allie Gallmeyer scored on and Eagle error and Homestead first baseman Allie Barley hit a two-run homer to right-center field to put the Spartans up 3-0.

'BUSCO BASEBALL: Eagels headed to semi-final

LAGRANGE — Churubusco’s Eagle baseball team scored in all six innings and pounded out 12 hits to down the host Lakeland Lakers 14-2 in Northeast Corner Conference tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday.

Devin Peters went the distance on the mound for the Eagles, giving up only four hits while striking out eight. Peters only gave up two walks in the win.

GOLF: Eagles downs Braves

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s Eagle golf team turned in one of its best scores of the season, downing visiting Bellmont at Eagle Glen by a 150-191 score.

The Eagles’ top four golfers all shot 40-or-under scores to top Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Bellmont.

WILDCAT VICTORY: Whitko boys win quad meet

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko picked up wins in seven events to down Northfield, Manchester and Lakeland Christian in a four-way boys’ home track meet Tuesday night.

Whitko’s boys picked up 98.5 points to top Northfield, who scored 85.5. Manchester was third with 58 points, and Lakeland Christian fourth with 1 point.

5 INNING WIN: Whitko downs Triton

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team handled Triton 12-1 in five innings Tuesday night behind a 10-run explosion from its offense in the fourth inning.

After the first inning ended with a scoreless tie, the game remained close after three with a 2-1 Wildcat lead. The Triton Trojans struggled to contain Whitko batters in the fourth, allowing 10 runs before ending the Wildcat rally.

3-WAY: Col. City girls take second

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls placed second in a three-way meet with Northeast Hoosier Conference foes New Haven and East Noble. East Noble scored 74 points to Columbia City’s 54, with New Haven finishing third with 38 points.

The Lady Eagles started the meet with a win in the 3,200-meter relay. The team of Morgan Von Seggern, Samina Qureshi, Lauren Keller and Hannah Wappes finished in 10:46 for the win. Wappes also picked up a win in the 800-meter run.
