TRACKSTERS: Whitley County competes at regional

WHITLEY COUNTY — All three Whitley County girls track teams competed in IHSAA regional competition Tuesday evening.

At the Warsaw regional, Whitko’s Kaitlyn Reed was the county’s only automatic qualifier for the June 6 state finals meet. The Whitko sophomore cleared the state qualifying height of 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump while placing fourth. Reed also competed in the 100-meter dash, but did not qualify for the finals in that event.

COMMING TO A CLOSE: Col. City softball falls to Indians

OSSIAN — Columbia City’s softball team lost in the first round of sectional play Monday against the Mississinewa Indians, 8-2.

Gusting winds blew dirt across the infield and even pop-flies into foul territory at Norwell High School while the Lady Eagles tried to keep their regional hopes alive.

13 TO 2: Whitko pounds Lakeland in sectional opener

LAGRANGE — Whitko softball took the first step on the road to an IHSAA sectional softball title Monday afternoon with a 13-2 win over the host Lakeland Lady Lakers in the opening round of Sectional No. 21 play.

Whitko took a first-inning lead thanks in part to a Lakeland error. With one out, Anna Ousley singled and went all the way to third when the Lakeland right fielder misplayed the ball. Ousley scored when Whitney Marsh reached on a second Lady Laker error, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead after one-half inning of play.

Col. City baseball drops two to Bishop Dwenger

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s baseball team traveled to Fort Wayne Saturday for a doubleheader against Bishop Dwenger. The Eagles lost both games, 10-0 and 6-3.

Game one opened with seven runs in the first two innings for the Saints.

TAKING TWO: Whitko baseball at Prairie Heights

BRUSHY PRAIRIE — Whitko’s baseball team traveled to Prairie Heights on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader. Whitko took both halves, winning game one 12-5 and taking the second contest 14-7.

“These are two great wins,” said Wildcat Head Coach Erik Hisner. “We challenged our players after a tough loss at Tippecanoe Valley and they responded with lots of intensity and focus. I can’t say enough about my guys today. They showed a lot of resiliency.”

NHC TITLE: Columbia City golf wins

KENDALLVILLE — The last name on the Northeast Hoosier Conference golf championship trophy will belong to Columbia City’s Eagles.

Columbia City claimed a three-shot victory over Homestead to win the conference tournament at Cobblestone Golf course on Saturday which, combined with their tie for first place in the regular season standings, gave the Eagles the overall NHC title.

Whitko tennis falls in sectional finals

WARSAW — Whitko’s Lady Wildcats took to the tennis courts at Warsaw High School for the finals of the IHSAA sectional. Whitko’s season came to an end as they fell 5-0 to the host Lady Tigers.

“We won some games,” said Whitko Head Coach Chris McGehee. “Our goal was to make the finals. That’s the same goal we had for the boys’ team. We had three girls that never played tennis before this year. The progress that we made this year in just making it to the finals was great. I am proud of the way they competed.”

WARSAW — A sweep of the singles matches gave Whitko’s Lady Wildcats a 3-2 win over Tippecanoe Valley in the semi-finals of the Warsaw tennis sectional Thursday evening.

After dropping both doubles matches, the Lady Wildcats came back to take all three singles matches in straight sets to advance to today’s sectional finals against host Warsaw, a 5-0 winner over Wawasee in the other semi-final.

NHC: Col. City golf ties for first

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s Eagle golf team closed out the regular season portion of its Northeast Hoosier Conference schedule with a 145-177 win over New Haven at Eagle Glen Golf Course.

The Eagle duo of Tyler Green and Spencer Klimek continued an outstanding season, with Green claiming medalist honors with a four-under-par 32, and Klimek also coming in under-par, with a one-under 35.

SECTIONAL WIN: Whitko boys track

WHITLEY COUNTY — Whitko’s boys track team took home the sectional title and several Whitley County athletes are headed to the regional competition next week.

Churubusco’s boys placed fifth in the North Side Sectional, and Columbia City came in 11th in the Goshen Sectional Thursday.
