Trucks and tractors put to the test at event

COLUMBIA CITY — Sounds of revving engines and the smell of exhaust filled the Grandstand Sunday during the Truck and Tractor Pull at the Whitley County 4-H Fair.

It was Matt Linnemeir that took first place at the 6500 Gas Modified class, after Jason Oliver tried twice to push his lime-green Chevy past the mark.

EARLY QUALIFIES FOR USATF NATIONALS: Wins twice in Regional

HUNTINGTON — Jasmine Early, of Columbia City, has continued her stellar summer of running by qualifying for the weekend for the USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Olympic National Championship in Houston next week. Early, age 12, who will be a seventh grader this fall at Indian Springs Middle School, captured two first-place finishes Sunday competing against 13- and 14-year-old girls at the USATF Regional Championships at Huntington University.

DRAG RACE: Mud and metal mayhem take stage

COLUMBIA CITY — Engine exhaust and mud filled the air at the Whitley County 4-H Fairgrounds Grandstand Monday for the inaugural Mud Drag Race. Coordinating the event was Jeremiah Ballard, seen frantically moving from truck to truck in his Whitley County 4-H Polo shirt, khaki shorts and mud-caked cowboy boots.

PIZZA NIGHT: Elks Lodge serves at Camp Whitley

The Columbia City Elks Lodge hosted pizza night at Camp Whitley. The boys and girls camp is one of the oldest youth camps in the state of Indiana, with many current Columbia City Elk members attending when they were young. The Columbia City Elks have assisted with many work projects at the camp over the past several years to keep up on assisting the youth of their community.

SOFTBALL CHAMPS: North Pole Contest Group goes undefeated in tourney

The North Pole Contest Group team from the Columbia City Parks Department’s youth softball league won the Minor League Championship. The team placed second overall in the league and were undefeated in the tourney. In the first game, the girls won 9-2 over Impact CNC. In the second game, the team beat Orion 6-2. The girls won the semi-final game against Fahl Colors 9-2, and beat R&D Landscaping in the championship game, 3-2. The squad is sponsored by North Pole Contest Group, a Ham Radio station of out Alaska.

WILDCAT WINNERS: Taking home the title

The Whitko Wildcat 14U Pony League team finished its season 11-3, playing in the Northern Indiana Boys of Summer 14U League. The boys won both the season title and tourney championship after beating Westview 6-5 in the semifinals, then downing a strong Middlebury team 11-6 to end the season.

ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETE: Early competes at USA youth championship

Jasmine Early, age 12, who will be a seventh grader this fall at Indian Springs Middle School, earned All-American status, competing in the 13 to 14-year-old age group at the USA Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Bloomington June 26-29. Jasmine placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23 and second in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:56.

Jasmine is the daughter of David and Kim Early, and granddaughter of Mark and Tina Schory, Carolyn and Dale Snyder, and Vernita Early, all of Columbia City.
