CCHS sinks Huntington North Vikings, 64-29

COLUMBIA CITY – It was a “perfect storm” of a night, when everything came together for the Columbia City Eagle basketball team in Tuesday’s contest against the Huntington North Vikings.
All phases of offense and defense were working for the Eagles in a game that was almost over in the first quarter, as the Eagles took a 64-29 home win over the Vikings.

VICTORY: Trine tops Alma, Mich., 71-57

ALMA, Mich. — A strong close to the first half and quick second-half start blew open a close game and paced Trine to a 71-57 victory over Alma Saturday afternoon at Art Smith Arena.

The Thunder outscored the Scots 22-4 in a stretch of play spanning from the 4:07 mark of the first half to 15:04 remaining in the contest. That span of just over nine minutes of play turned a four-point Trine lead into a 46-24 advantage with 15:04 to play.

Big plays at game’s end propel Grace over Huntington

HUNTINGTON — Playing in a packed Platt Arena, big plays in the final seconds lifted Grace’s men’s basketball team to a 71-68 win at Huntington on Saturday.

With the win, the Lancers (15-5) moved into tie for second place in the Crossroads League standings with a 5-3 conference mark, while the Foresters, riding a four-game losing skid, dropped into a tie for eighth in the league standings with a 2-6 conference record while Saturday’s win moves the Lancers (15-5) into a four-way tie for second as they currently boast a 5-3 CL record.

WRESTLING: Col. City takes Goshen Inv. title

GOSHEN — For nine years between 2000 and 2009, the Columbia City wrestling team ruled the Goshen Invitational, not only winning the tournament each year but also producing a record 296 points in 2004.

Saturday, the Eagles broke a three-year string by the host Goshen Redskins, scoring 245.5 points to take the team championship.

The host Redskins were second with 201 points, with the Whitko Wildcats placing third with 164 points. Rounding out the field were Fairfield (151.5), Bronson (136.5), Lakeland (119), Fort Wayne North Side (118), and Eastern (115.5).

COL. CITY OUTSCORES SPARTANS IN 3RD: Homestead holds on for win over Lady Eagles

COLUMBIA CITY — The Lady Eagles were handed their first loss at home Saturday night, as Homestead’s girls basketball team traveled to Columbia City and left with a 62-50 win.

Columbia City Head Coach Amy Shearer said she was proud of her team’s effort, despite the loss.

LAGRANGE — Churubusco’s boys basketball team did something Saturday night that no other basketball team in the history of the school has done — won a conference tourney championship.

The Eagles defeated the Fairfield Falcons in the championship game, 63-59. From the beginning of the game, it was apparent that it would be a fast-paced battle.

WHITLEY COUNTY — Teams from all three Whitley County high schools will have full schedules this weekend.
Columbia City boys basketball squares off against conference-leading Homestead and its Division I recruit Caleb Swanigan at the Spartans’ gym tonight.

The Lady Eagles will play host to the Lady Spartans on Saturday night at 6 p.m. The Columbia City wrestlers will travel to the Goshen Invitational on Saturday with wrestling beginning at 9 a.m.
