HUNTINGTON MEN: split pair of games in Arizona

PHOENIX, Ariz.— The Forester men’s basketball team opened up the Arizona Christian University Classic with a 78-57 win over the University of Northern British Columbia, Monday afternoon, to improve to 11-3 on the year, but fell to host the Arizona Christian Firestorm 80-45 Wednesday.

Former Columbia City standout, Derek Hinen poured in a game-high 25 points to pace HU. He connected on 11-of-15 field goal attempts which included going 3-for-3 behind the arc, in addition to handing out a game-best six assists.

WRESTLING: Impressive first-place grappler

BOY BASKETBALL: Holiday tourney starts today

Columbia City’s boys basketball team begins holiday tournament play today at CCHS. After a noon game, the Eagles play again at 8 p.m. tonight. The tourney concludes at Carroll High School tomorrow.

LADY EAGLES: Columbia City grabs two wins in tourney opener

MIDDLEBURY — The Columbia City Lady Eagles opened pool play in the 2014 Bankers Classic Holiday Basketball Tournament at Northridge High School Monday afternoon with games against the Northwood Lady Panthers and South Bend Adams.

The Lady Eagles downed Northwood in the opener 47-44 in a nail-biter that went down to the final seconds, with free-throws to seal the win. In the second contest against South Bend Adams, the Lady Eagles used free throws down the stretch to pull out a come-from-behind, 56-50 win.

STRONG SWIMMERS

Several boys from Columbia City High School’s swim team had strong performances last week at the Wawasee Invitational. Pictured is the second-place, 200-yard freestyle relay team of Matt Weber, Dayne Trump, Robby Owen and Jon Fix. The squad posted a season-best time and a similar performance could give the team a chance to advance to the state finals in late February. Many swimmers recorded personal best times at the meet. The Eagles placed fifth out of nine teams.

SECOND: Eagle wrestlers place in East Central Indiana Classic

PORTLAND ­— Churubusco’s wrestling team took second place in a 17-team field at Saturday’s East Central Indiana Classic at Jay County High School. The Eagles crowned two weight class champions on their way to garnering 184 points, placing second behind perennial powerhouse Delta’s 202.

Host Jay County took third with Monroe Central fourth and Muncie Central fifth. The Eagles’ Lyle McParlan claimed the title at 152 pounds. McParlan took a narrow 7-6 decision over host Jay County’s Tyler Leonhard in the finals to win the title.

TINCAPS: Nolan shares broadcasting experience

COLUMBIA CITY — Minor league baseball is alive and well in Fort Wayne. So says John Nolan, the on-air broadcaster for the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Nolan spoke this week to the Columbia City Rotary Club about his background and how he came to be the broadcaster for the local minor league baseball team.

CITY WINS: Eagles take down Wawasee, 55-38

COLUMBIA CITY — Midway through the third quarter, Columbia City’s Brachen Hazen had 10 rebounds. That doesn’t seem significant, except that at that same point in the game, the entire Wawasee team had 10 rebounds.

In typical Columbia City fashion rebounding, defense and free throws were the key as the Eagles dominated all three areas.

Columbia City led from start to finish and sent the Warriors home with a 55-38 loss.

BASKETBALL: ISMS girls continue to shine

COLUMBIA CITY — The eighth grade Lady Eagles defeated Maple Creek Dec. 18 by the score of 34-30. Ava Winters led the way with 14 points and 14 rebounds. The Lady Eagles stepped up big down the stretch, coming back from being 8 points down in the second half. The Lady Eagle eighth grade team sports an unblemished 7-0 record.

EAGLES SOAR: CCHS conquer Concordia Cadets, 51-48

FORT WAYNE — The Columbia City Lady Eagle basketball squad traveled to Concordia Lutheran High School Monday night looking to break a three-game losing streak.
The Eagles broke out of an early game shooting slump and then – with both good team patience and some fine individual efforts from players off the bench – held off the highly regarded Lady Cadets to vanquish the losing streak with a 51-48 win.
Early on the game bore striking resemblance to the last few contests as the visiting Lady Eagles missed their first eight shots from the field, quickly falling behind 9-0.
