LEAGUE: Crooked Lake Ladies League informational meeting Wednesday

Warm weather is coming into full swing, and with that comes local golf leagues. Submit information about your golf league to sports@thepostandmail.com.

Crooked Lake Ladies Golf League will be having an organizational meeting Wednesday (May 1) at 9 a.m. at the club house. All levels of play are welcome. Time of play in May is slated for 9 a.m., every Wednesday. In June, league will begin at 8:30 a.m. Call Frances Brown at 244-5037 with questions.

Col. City splits double-header with W. Noble

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s baseball team split a doubleheader with West Noble Saturday, giving the Eagles a 5-2 record on the year.

Columbia City lost the morning game 12-10, and then took the second game 12-2 in five innings.

In game one, the visiting Chargers put up eight runs in the first two innings, while the Eagles only managed one. West Noble’s biggest lead in the game was eight, when the Chargers were up 10-2 after four innings.

Col. City girls win East Noble Relays

KENDALLVILLE — Columbia City’s girls track team won the East Noble Relays for the sixth year in a row on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles won the invitational by a close 15 points.

“It was a close meet the entire day,” Columbia City Head Coach Bob Fahl said. “It came down the the last race. It was a great display of effort by so many young ladies.”

The team was led by Kalisha Goree, who was named the John Reed Relays MVP.

Goree won the long jump and 100-meter hurdles, and placed fourth in the high jump, behind teammate Carlee Hearld who won the event.

Whitko easily handles S. Wells

PONETO — Whitko’s baseball team took two lopsided wins over Southern Wells Saturday.

The Wildcats won the first game 13-3, and the second 15-4.

In game one, Hunter Sroufe batted 3-for-3, scored four runs, including a home run, and had two RBIs.

Wyatt Wolf pitched all five innings with four strike outs. He gave up one earned run, three hits and two walks.

Sroufe, along with Ethan Nicodemus, picked up the opening runs for the ’Cats off a single by Zach Snep.

Klimek takes fourth overall at Wawasee

SYRACUSE — Columbia City’s golf team placed 10th in a field of 15 at the Wawasee Invitational Saturday at South Shore Golf Course.

The Eagles were led by freshman Spencer Klimek, who finished fourth overall with a score of 75, three over par.

Kilmek shot a 37 on the front nine and 38 on the back half to pace Columbia City.

Tyler Green wasn’t far behind, shooting a 79.

Northwood won the invite with a score of 305, 32 strokes less than the Eagles.

Whitko also competed in the event and placed 13th.

Lady Eagles drop twin bill to Bishop Dwenger

COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagle softball team played host on Saturday to a very athletic Bishop Dwenger Lady Saints team on a day that boasted the best weather in weeks.

The Lady Eagles dropped both ends of a doubleheader, playing the first game close before falling 5-1, and cleared the bench for the second contest in a 10-0 loss.

In game one the Saints got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, as the second Saints’ batter, Amanda Miller was hit by Columbia City pitcher Krystin Van Houten.

Whitko JV splits with Garrett

GARRETT — Whitko’s JV baseball squad split a doubleheader with Garrett Saturday.

The Wildcats took game one 10-7 and lost a close game two, 9-8.

Garrett Smiley pitched six innings and earned the win in game one from the mound. He had four strikeouts.

At the plate, Carter Keirn had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Riley Anderson had two hits with a double and two RBIs. Reed Brace got two hits as well for Whitko, including a double.

‘Busco falls in extra innings to Northrop

FORT WAYNE — Churubusco’s softball team had a familiar weekend performance Saturday.

For the second time in two days, the Lady Eagles lost a 9-8 ball game to a much larger school. Friday, it was against Columbia City. Saturday, it was on the road at Fort Wayne Northrop, with ‘Busco falling in 12 innings.

It wasn’t for a lack of hitting on ’Busco’s part. The Lady Eagles cracked 13 hits overall in the contest, with Amber Aspy leading the way with three. Chandler Blake had two hits and a double and also scored twice. Gabby Jones and Lacey Pulley both had two hits also.

Eagle golf falls in close match

COLUMBIA CITY — Though Columbia City’s golf team didn’t end the night victorious Friday, the Eagles came the closest to beating Homestead since 2009.

Columbia City fell 157-162, but it wasn’t from lack of talent on the Spartans’ end.

Columbia City’s Tyler Green finished on par with 36 strokes. Fellow Eagle Spencer Klimek also finished under 40, with a 39. Green rebounded from a 41 the night before, a prediction of Head Coach Andrew Thompson’s that held true.

“It was nice to see Tyler recover from last night and shoot par at home,” Thompson said.

COLUMBIA CITY — They survived.

More than once Columbia City’s Lady Eagles’ softball team had a big inning against Churubusco, only to have the visitors respond. Columbia City emerged victorious though Friday with a 9-8 win.

The winning run came on a wild pitch. Hannah Schnorr of Columbia City was on third waiting and raced across the plate in the bottom of the sixth for the deciding score.

“I told Schnorr be ready, we’ve got to score,” said Columbia City Softball Head Coach Steve Cox.
