BEST IN EIGHT YEARS: Lady Eagle volleyball earns county crown

SOUTH WHITLEY — With the mythical Whitley County Championship on the line, the Columbia City Lady Eagle volleyball team traveled south on Ind. 205 to take on the Whitko Lady Wildcats Monday night. Having defeated the other Whitley County rival, Churubusco, in four games earlier in the season, the only thing standing in the Lady Eagles’ way was a team that Columbia City Head Coach Trish Hinen called the “best Whitko team that I have seen in the past eight years.”

AWARDS PODIUM FILLED: Expectations exceeded at invitational

FORT WAYNE — One of the great moments in sports often occurs when results exceed expectations. When Columbia City Cross Country Head Coach Bob Fahl’s team went into Saturday’s New Haven Classic, he wanted the boys and girls teams to simply improve on last year’s performances and placings.
The Eagle teams went much further than that, as both squads made it to the awards podium. The girls team, which placed seventh last year, took the first place trophy in its division, while the boys’ team placed fifth in its division.

LADY EAGLES' SEASON ENDS: Linksters post lowest score of season at regional

KENDALLVILLE — After earning its first regional spot since 2006, Columbia City’s girls golf season came to a close Saturday. The Lady Eagles placed ninth in a competitive East Noble Regional field at Cobblestone Golf Course in Kendallville. “It was a heavyweight field but we beat some really good teams,” Head Coach Andrew Thompson said.

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s boys tennis team fell to Adams Central, 4-1.
The No. 2 doubles team of Landon and Luke Lillmars won in a three-set series 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. In No. singles, Derek Bowyer fell 6-0, 6-3.

4th OUT OF 31: ISMS harriers have strong showing

The Indian Springs Middle School varsity girls cross country team came in fourth out of 31 teams at the West Noble Invitational Saturday. The team was led by Jasmine Early who came in fourth. The ISMS boys placed eighth out of 31 teams at the invite. Landon Wakeman and Nathan Mills both placed in the top 25 for ISMS. WHITKO, SECOND WIN OF WEEK: Lady Wildcats down Hamilton in three

SOUTH WHITLEY — Coming hot off of its victory against Wabash Tuesday, the Whitko Lady Wildcats varsity volleyball team defeated the Hamilton Marines Thursday night, 3-0. Now, with an 8-2 record, the Lady Wildcats are just one game shy of tying last season’s record of nine wins.

GIRLS FALL: Whitko boys tie Eastbrook

SOUTH WHITLEY — Both Whitko boys and girls soccer teams faced off against the Eastbrook Panthers Wednesday. The boys team ended the game with a tie, finishing 1-1. The Lady Wildcats were hard-pressed to score against the Lady Panthers and fell 0-6.

’CATS WIN: Defeat Tippecanoe Valley, 4-1

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys tennis team played against Tippecanoe Valley High School at home Tuesday, defeating the Vikings 4-1. Cole Bechtold scored a point in No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 6-4.

LOW TENNIS TURNOUT: Eagles work to build up program

COLUMBIA CITY — It’s been a numbers game for Columbia City’s boys tennis team this season. Not the numbers on the scoreboard, but the number of players on the court. Before the season, the squad only had two players on the team. That number grew to five, but still not enough to have a full varsity team.

COLUMBIA CITY — On Monday, the Columbia City Lady Eagle volleyball team found itself on the short end of a 3-1 decision to Blackhawk Christian. Tuesday night, the Lady Eagles, after a first game setback, combined the same stingy defense from Monday night with a long, sought-after, consistent offense to down Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Norwell 3-1.
