Eagles fall to Norwell in close game

Columbia City’s baseball team fell to Norwell with a score of 8-4 Tuesday night.

In the first inning, both teams scored one run within the first four at-bats, tying the first inning 1-1.

In the top of the second, Columbia City’s Justin Dailey caught an impressive backwards pop fly, making it the third out and keeping Norwell from scoring.

In the bottom of the second, a single was hit by Jake Elkins and a double was hit by Gary Ormsby.

Track sectional action begins

The road to the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Track and Field Finals began Tuesday night as girls’ teams from Whitko and Columbia City traveled to New Haven for sectional competition.

Both teams rose to the occasion, with top four finishes guaranteeing advancement to next week’s Northrop track regional, the Wildcats qualified in six individual events while Columbia City qualified in three individual events and all three of their relay teams.

’Busco girls earn NECC title

Churubusco’s track teams faired well in the Northeast Corner Conference meet Friday night at Fairfield.

The Lady Eagles took home the girls’ title, while the boys placed second to Lakeland.

The Lady Eagles won the meet with outstanding performances from athletes such as Danielle Pippenger and Katie Monk.

Pippenger won the 100-meter hurdles, long jump, high jump, and placed second in the 300-meter hurdles to earn 38 of Churubusco’s 107 points.

Monk won both of her events, the shot put and discus, to earn 20 points.
The boys had strong performances as well.

Col. City linksters place second

Columbia City’s boys golf team placed second in a competitive invitational Saturday, falling to Bishop Dwenger by five strokes.

The invite, hosted by Leo at Cedar Creek Golf Course, had 18 teams, including Homestead, which beat the Eagles earlier this season.

Columbia City came back to edge Homestead by two strokes Saturday. Bishop Dwenger’s winning score was 310, followed by Columbia City’s 315 and Homestead at 317.

Eagle Spencer Klimek was the overall medalist, scoring a 75. Max Dryer tied for 6th with a 77.

Eagles fall to East Noble, 6-5

Columbia City’s baseball team fell to East Noble Wednesday night with a close score of 6-5.

In the top of the first inning, an error on the Eagles’ part allowed the Knights to score a run and take the lead.

The second inning remained scoreless, as both teams kept the other from reaching home plate.

In the top of the third inning, two base hits from East Noble put players at first and second base. Then the Knights hit a home run, scoring three.

Col. City drops NHC match to Carroll

Columbia City’s girls tennis team was defeated Thursday night against its conference rival Carroll by a score of 5-0.

Columbia City’s undefeated No. 1 doubles team, Sydney Ford and Macie Hinen suffered its first loss of the season with by a score of 6-0, 6-0.

Cassie Bosselman and Bayley Smith, playing at No. 2 doubles, were also defeated by in a closer match, by a score of 6-2, 7-5.

The Lady Eagles playing singles also struggled against the strong Carroll squad.

Whitko golf falls to T. Valley

May 15, 2014

Whitko’s boys golf team fell in a Three Rivers Conference dual against Tippecanoe Valley Tuesday night.

The Wildcats dropped the match to their conference rivals, 168-183.
Leading Whitko was Danny Zawlocki with 41 strokes.

Two Wildcat linksters posted 47s, Matt Hathaway and Will Peters.

Whitko’s bottom two golfers, Cole Bechtold and Tim Gensch, each scored 48s.
Tippecanoe Valley posted scores of 38, 41, 44, 45 and 46.
