CC boys open volleyball season

INDIANAPOLIS — The Columbia City High School Eagles’ boys’ volleyball team traveled to Indianapolis for its season-opening tournament at Bishop Chatard High School, recording a 1-3 record for the tournament.

The squad, consisting of three seniors, one junior and the rest sophomores, opened pool play against Fishers, a new team in the IBVCA membership.

The Eagles struggled to put together points until the end of the first game, when they rallied from a 21-16 deficit to win the first game, 26-24.

SOUTH WHITLEY— Baseball is the American pastime and basic fundamentals are still at its core. If a team can hit the ball and play good defense it can win a lot of games. The 2015 Whitko Wildcats baseball team fits perfectly into that mold. Whitko will be strong at the plate, defensively very sound and if the ‘Cats can find some more pitching they just might be a threat come sectional time.

BASKETBALL: Hazen named to junior all-star team

INDIANAPOLIS —The IndyStar.com Indiana boys Junior All-Star team for 2015 has been announced. The 18 players selected include Columbia City’s Brachen Hazen.

Hazen, a 6-foot-7 forward, was selected as a member of the South group which will play one game along with the core group against the senior All-Stars.

Players in the core group include Joey Brunk of Southport, Eron Gordon of Cathedral, Kyle Guy of Lawrence Central, Damien Jefferson of East Chicago Central, Kyle Mallers of Carroll (Fort Wayne) and C.J. Walker of Indianapolis Tech.

STRONG START: Whitko downs ’Busco in county softball

SOUTH WHITLEY — Thanks to a terrific effort by Whitko Athletic Director Casey Stouffer to ready the playing surface after a morning rainstorm, the Lady Wildcats and the visiting Churubusco Lady Eagles were able to play a season-opening contest Wednesday night.

Cold temperatures and a brisk wind didn’t stop the Lady Wildcats from blowing the game open with a five-run third inning on their way to a 10-0 win.

ZONE FINALS: YMCA swim competes

ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Whitley County YMCA Rapids swim team had its most successful showing at the Great Lakes Zone meet this past weekend at Oakland University.

Competing against 1,400 of the top swimmers from 92 teams and five different states in the Great Lakes region, the Rapids finished 35th overall with 114 points.

The boys 11-12 year-old squad finished 11th with 95 points and girls 11-12 year-old’s finished 21st with 19 points.

TRACKSTERS: Whitko and Churubusco compete at indoor state

WEST LAFAYETTE — Track and field athletes from Whitko and Churubusco High Schools took part in the Hoosier State Relays Saturday at Lambert Fieldhouse on the Purdue University campus.

The Whitko girls squad, which placed 14th as a team in the small-school division, was paced by second-place finisher senior Elaine Warner in the long jump. Warner jumped 17 feet, one-half inch to place second.

Big Dance Round Up and Look Ahead

Last week we gave you a preview of the tournament and some predictions of teams that we felt could make a run to the Final 4. Well, those predictions were way off and the bracket this writer submitted to his friends and a couple websites sits in about 10 millionth place. All the wise guys were talking about Iowa State and Virginia. Those teams won a combined 1 game. Now we are going to go region by region to see what happened and what we can look forward to seeing next weekend.

Columbia City High School’s swim team presented the following awards at its annual banquet: Carson Miller, Leadership and Most Improved Award; Kellie Frei, Most Improved Award; Maggie Vandersaul, Coaches Award; Rhea Young, Mental Attitude Award; Rylee Hackworth, High Point Award; Matthew Webber, High Point Award; Jon Fix, Coaches Award; Cassie Bosselman, Leadership Award; and Dayne Trump, Mental Attitude Award.
