Hazen stays sharp in the offseason

Columbia City High School stand-out hoopster and incoming junior Brachen Hazen recently returned from the invitation-only Nike Elite 100 Camp on the campus of the University of St. Louis, which, according to the camp invitation, “Is the nation’s premier basketball event for elite high school freshman and sophomore basketball players.”

TEE TIME: Golf regionals tee off today

The top golfers across the state are teeing off in regional action this week, with the hopes of advancing to the state finals.

One of those linksters is Churubusco’s Beau Barkley, who advanced from the East Noble Sectional last week.

Columbia City’s boys team is also taking the links at Stonehenge Golf Club today in an effort to advance to the state match next week.

Members of Columbia City’s team include Tyler Green, Spencer Klimek, Max Dryer, Trent Murphy and Cameron Slavich.

REGIONAL BEGINS TOMORROW: C.C. golf and Barkley preparing

Columbia City’s golf team, along with Churubusco’s Beau Barkley, is preparing for regional action Thursday morning at Stonehenge Golf Club in Warsaw.

The Eagles advanced after winning the Warsaw Sectional at Rozella Ford Golf Course last week. Barkley placed second individually at the East Noble Sectional at Noble Hawk Golf Course. The match is slated to begin at 9 a.m.

Monk earns state runner up

Whitley County’s stand-out athletes took the track Friday and Saturday for the Indiana State Track meet at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Out of Whitley County’s three schools, Churubusco’s tracksters were the lone contingent of local athletes to compete at the state level.

Katie Monk competed in two events, earning state runner up in the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 7 inches, and taking 26th in shot put with a toss of 29-9.5.

The winning discus throw came from a Lawrence North athlete at 160 feet, 2 inches.

BLOOMINGTON — Whitley County’s stand-out athletes took the track Friday and Saturday for the Indiana State Track meet at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Barkley advances to regional

KENDALLVILLE — Churubusco’s golf season came to a heart-breaking end Friday afternoon at Noble Hawk Golf Course in Kendallville.

The Eagles competed in the East Noble sectional, falling four strokes short of advancing to regional play next week.

Beau Barkley wasn’t ready for his season to end, however, placing second individually and earning a solo trip to the sectional. Barkley scored a 76.

Golf sectionals tee off tomorrow

Whitley County’s high school golf teams are prepping for sectional action Friday morning.

Columbia City and Whit-ko will be teeing off at Rozella Ford in Warsaw, while Churubusco will begin sectional play at Noble Hawk in Kendallville.
Churubusco’s sectional is hosted by East Noble and is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

Other teams in the sectional include Angola, Carroll, Central Noble, DeKalb, East Noble, Eastside, North-rop, Fremont, Garrett, Hamilton and Leo.

The Warsaw sectional is slated for an 8 a.m. tee time.
