City tops Churubusco

COLUMBIA CITY — Ryan Kerschner hit a grand slam, but it still took extra innings for Columbia City to beat Churubusco Monday.

Columbia City defeated ‘Busco by a final of 6-5 in eight innings.

Kerschner may have had the big blast, but it was Jordan Bickle who had the winning one, doubling in the bottom of the eighth to bring home Travis Herbst and end the game.

The grand slam came in the bottom of the first inning and gave Columbia City a 4-1 lead. Churubusco had scored in the top of the first off of a sacrifice hit by Brent Simmons, which scored Logan Harris.

Wildcats drop close pair to Railroaders

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball saw its five-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Garrett Saturday.

The Wildcats lost a pair of close contests to the Railroaders in a varsity doubleheader. Garrett won game one 6-4 and took game two 1-0.

Leading Whitko at the plate in game one were Alex Stoddard and Ethan Nicodemus, who both had two hits and a run scored.

Stoddard threw a complete-game, two-hitter in the second contest, giving up the lone run of the game unearned and having 13 strikeouts.

’Busco wins sixth straight

CHURUBUSCO — The Eagles extended their streak to six.

That’s what happened Saturday when Churubusco’s boys track and field team won the ’Busco Invite. The Eagles have now won their own invite every year since 2008.

The run began in Head Coach Zach Dock’s second year with the team.
“To win six straight is pretty important to our kids,” Dock said.

Weather conditions were not conducive to the running, jumping and throwing that the high school athletes were doing.

Eagles take second at Northrop golf Inv.

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s freshmen continue to lead the Eagles’ golf team, as Tyler Green and Spencer Klimek took first and second place at the Northrop Invitational Saturday.

In a pool of six teams, Green and Klimek tied with Sebastian Eckert, of Huntington North, finishing their rounds in 80 strokes.

Green won the playoff, followed by Klimek.

In cold, damp weather, Columbia City Head Coach Andrew Thompson was proud of the pair.

“It was great to see them do so well in those conditions,” Thompson said. “We were awfully close to the team title.”
