CC BASKETBALL: Eagle season ends at Regional

HARTFORD CITY — In a closely played game between two high-caliber, patient teams, every possession counts.

In Saturday’s IHSAA Blackford Regional semifinal, turnovers in the middle two quarters limited the Columbia City Eagles’ offensive opportunities and allowed the NorthWood Panthers to rally in the fourth quarter to down the Eagles 39-33, ending Columbia City’s season at 19-8.

Sam Eberly, a third-grader at Mary Raber Elementary School, has been a part of the Columbia City boys basketball team since he could walk. Eberly was there for the team’s last sectional title in 2011 and was there on Saturday when the Eagles got to cut down the nets in their own gym. Eberly is pictured with the sectional trophy.

ALL-NHC SQUADS: Four players are placed from Col. City

COLUMBIA CITY — IHSAA Sectional Champion Columbia City placed four players on the All-Northeast Hoosier Conference teams for 2014-15, including two first-team selections.

Senior Mason Coverstone, who provided a 3-point threat for the Eagles all season, was a first-team selection. Brachen Hazen joined Coverstone as a first-team selection. The 6-foot-7 Hazen was one of three juniors on the first-team squad.

INVITATIONAL WINNERS: 7 ISMS grapplers take titles

ALBION — Indian Springs wrestling team competed in the Central Noble Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, with 11 wrestlers advancing to the finals, and seven of those winning in the championship round.

Winning championships for Indian Springs were Jarrett Forrester, Ryan Sheets, Dylan Arick, Riley Hare, Jacob Wigent, Jon O’Dell and Drew Rethlake.

WRESTLING: ISMS grapplers down Woodside

COLUMBIA CITY — Indian Springs Middle School’s wrestling squad posted its second home win of the week on Thursday night. After downing Whitko 76-16 on Wednesday, the Eagles came back to drop Woodside 74-12 Thursday night.

Against Woodside, the Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead on pinfall wins by Connor Fry, Jarrett Forester and Seth Schaper, and a decision by Ryan Sheets.

'BUSCO SEASON ENDS: First-half deficit too much as team loses to Canterbury

WOODBURN — Nine first-half turnovers and 9-of-34 shooting from the field against a team that hits 20-of-37 over the same time period all adds up to a 26-point hole after three quarters.

That hole proved to be too much for a gallant Churubusco squad that managed to cut the margin to 11 at one point in the fourth quarter, before falling to Canterbury 77-62 in the Class 2A Sectional 36 final at Woodlan Monday night.

Kentucky went about business as usual. They beat an in conference foe thoroughly as they should. Karl Anthony towns had 13 points and 9 rebounds as they Wildcats finished their first undefeated regular season in program history.

SECTIONAL TITLE: First since 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Saturday night’s IHSAA Columbia City Sectional final had all sorts of offense; 3-pointers, both from shots from behind the arc, and the old-fashioned way. There was a dunk and driving acrobatic shots, but in the end, it was Columbia City’s defense that gave the Eagles their first sectional title since 2011 with a 47-40 win over the Norwell Knights.

Columbia City's and Churubusco's boys basketball teams are headed to sectional championship games.

Columbia City beat Eastbrook Friday night to play Saturday in Columbia City at 7:30 p.m. Columbia City boys basketball players are asking fans to wear black to the game.

Churubusco beat Woodlan Friday night and will face Canterbury Monday at 7 p.m.
