’Cats win; still undefeated in TRC

DENVER — Whitko’s football team continued its winning streak Friday, downing Three Rivers Conference foe North Miami 49-35 to remain undefeated in the TRC.

Devin Gerding tallied three of the Wildcats’ seven touchdowns — two in the air and one on the ground.

Gerding scored the ’Cats’ first two TDs of the game to give Whitko a strong 14-0 advantage in the first quarter.

His first score came off a 26-yard pass from quarterback Ethan Nicodemus with less than five minutes off the clock.

’Busco seeks, finds revenge against Culver

CHURUBUSCO — Rewind to one year ago, and Churubusco was handed its first and only loss of the regular season at Culver Academy.

The opposing Eagles stomped ’Busco 35-16. Churubusco was on a four-game shutout streak before traveling to Culver last September.

The tables were turned this season, as Churubusco dropped Culver Academy (4-4) by a 20-3 score.

The first quarter was a defensive battle, as neither team found the end zone.

’Busco picked up momentum in the second quarter after a fourth-down conversion.

Eagles fall to East Noble

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City Eagle football team still licking its wounds from a spate of injuries ran into a visiting East Noble squad, angry from an upset loss last week.

The Eagles, despite what Head Coach Randy Hudgins called a "good week of practice," came out flat and dug themselves a 14-0 first quarter hole on their way to a 31-7 Northeast Hoosier Conference loss on a rainy night at Max Gandy Athletic Field.

The Eagles' offensive woes from last week continued as they struggled to handle a veteran East Noble defensive line.

Whitko volleyball wins, boys soccer falls to Garrett

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s athletics picked up a win and a loss Thursday night.

The Lady Wildcats beat Canterbury in a four-game volleyball match, but the Wildcat boys soccer team fell 4-0 to Garrett.

Whitney Hobbs led the way for Whitko’s volleyball squad.

Hobbs had 13 kills and three aces.

The Lady Wildcats won the first game 25-17, but fell 25-21 in game two.

Whitko retaliated in games three and four, winning 25-20 and 25-22 to pick up the win.

Elaine Warner had 26 assists for the Lady Wildcats.

Col. City takes NHC victory

KENDALLVILLE — Columbia City’s volleyball team took a four-game victory over Northeast Hoosier Conference foe East Noble Thursday night.

The Lady Eagles opened up the first game with a quick, 25-15 win, but lost by nearly the same margin in game two, falling 25-14.

Columbia City refocused in the third game, beating the Lady Knights 25-18.

PINK OUT: ’Busco sweeps West Noble

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s volleyball team hosted a breast cancer awareness game Thursday, and beat West Noble in three games.

The Lady Eagles sported pink uniforms, sold wristbands and buttons, as well as a “chuck a duck” competition to raise money — and beat Northeast Corner Conference foe West Noble 25-18, 25-19 and 25-20.

Alisha Farner led ’Busco in aces with six. Lacey Pulley had 25 assists and 13 digs.

Whitko defeats Wawasee

SYRACUSE — Whitko’s volleyball team earned a tough five-set win against Wawasee Tuesday.

The Lady Wildcats beat the Lady Warriors 19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23 and 15-8.

Garrett beats Col. City soccer

GARRETT — Columbia City’s boys soccer team fell to Garrett Wednesday.

The Railroaders beat the Eagles by a final score of 3-0.

It was one goal in the first half and two in the second to bring the game to the final margin for the Railroaders.

Whitko to face North Miami

SOUTH WHITLEY — At the two-thirds mark of the 2013 season, the race for a league championship is on, and Whitko’s football team is in the thick of it in the Three Rivers Conference.

Standing at 4-2 overall, the Wildcats are a spotless 4-0 in the conference and will hit the road Friday to play North Miami. The Warriors are 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the TRC.

Sectional champions one year ago, North Miami has struggled this season, including a 34-21 loss to Southwood last week.

Col. City looking to rebound Friday

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City will be looking to rebound in the Northeast Hoosier Conference after a difficult loss last Friday.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, their opponents likely feel the same way. East Noble will travel to Columbia City Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

After suffering numerous injuries, Columbia City fell victim to unbeaten New Haven, 29-7 last week.

East Noble, ranked 15th in Class 4A according to the Associated Press, was shocked by Norwell last Friday, 35-7. It was Norwell’s first win on the year and dropped East Noble to 4-2, 2-2 in the NHC.

Eagles seeking revenge at home

CHURUBUSCO — Any time a school is ranked third in the state, it has picked up some big victories.

Churubusco’s football team, currently ranked third in Class 2A in Indiana, is no exception. The Eagles are coming off of a punishing shutout victory against West Noble last week by a 49-0 score to move to 6-0 for 2013.

Now, a big test comes the Eagles’ way in the form of their opponent this Friday, Culver Military Academy.
