RIVALRY: Eagles top Whitko easily

COLUMBIA CITY – When Columbia City and Whitko boys’ basketball teams meet in their traditional pre-Thanksgiving contest, the game takes on a sectional atmosphere with each side going all out. This year’s edition featured a tall, long, aggressive veteran Columbia City squad and a Whitko team with a brand new coach, and one win in games last season. Under some instances with a rivalry of this sort one might through records and such things out, but in this case things went according to expectations, as the Eagles opened their season with a dominating 73-16 win.

’BUSCO WINS: Eagles take down Adams Central in opener

MONROE - Some basketball games are decided at the buzzer with one team hitting a shot as time expires for an exciting victory. Wednesday night's season-opener for the Churubusco Eagles boys basketball game was not decided at the buzzer. Instead, the Eagles first game of the year was decided in the first five minutes of the game. 'Busco used a full-court press and fast-break offense early to ground Adams Central and then pulled away for a 65-42 win.

WRESTLING OPENER: Eagle grapplers fall to Bellmont

The intensity gets amped up a few notches if you are a Columbia City wrestler. Every season, the Eagles open up the year against perennial powerhouse and Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Bellmont.

WHITKO HOOPS: Turnovers, 3-pointers drop Lady Wildcats

HUNTINGTON — The Whitko Lady Wildcats basketballt eam traveled south on Ind. 5 to take on a winless Huntington Lady Vikings team Friday night.

The Lady Wildcats could not overcome offensive turnovers in the middle two quarters, and a Huntington advantage from behind the 3-point arc, falling to the host Lady Vikings by a 70-61 score.

Miami QB Ryan Tannehill threw 2 second half touchdowns to rally a comeback victory over Buffalo. Buffalo was moving the ball up and down the field early, but could not seem to find the end zone to cap drivers. They clung to a 9-3 lead as they kept Miami in check. Tannehill was able to rally his team’s offense to score 19 unanswered points to seal the game and second place in the AFC East.

SOUTH WHITLEY – For the second time in as many nights, two Whitley County rivals squared off in a girls’ basketball game. Friday night, Whitko traveled to Columbia City and fell to the Lady Eagles, 39-36.
