WRESTLING: ISMS grapplers take Crestview Invite

HUNTINGTON — Indian Springs Middle School’s wrestling team claimed the Crestview Invitational tournament championship on Saturday.

Indian Springs went undefeated, beating Woodside 66-6, Adams Central 34-33, Riverview 33-21 and downing Southern Wells in the championship round, 37-24.

Indian Springs’ closest match was with Adams Central, a team that had beaten ISMS previously in the season.

WHITKO SEASON OVER: Wawasee use third quarter to run away with 71-59 win

LIGONIER — Just as Whitko’s girls basketball season was ended by Wawasee, the boys fell to the Warriors in sectional play as well.

Whitko opened sectional play at West Noble Tuesday night, falling to Wawasee, 71-59.
The Wildcats played a competitive game in the first half, but a third-quarter offensive slump cost the ’Cats the game.

COLUMBIA CITY — For the Columbia City boys’ basketball team this year, the recipe for success has been pretty simple — establish the inside game and every thing else will follow.

In Tuesday night’s opening game of IHSAA Columbia City Sectional 23, the homestanding Eagles did just that, exploiting a height advantage on both ends of the floor to down the Mississinewa Indians, 70-45.

While many squads are jumping into sectional play tonight, Churubusco’s boys basketball team has a break after drawing the bye, automatically advancing to the Woodlan Sectional’s semi-final. AGAIN: Canterbury headed to state

Fort Wayne Canterbury School’s Darby Maggard (right) and Coach Wayne Kreiger, both of Whitley County, are headed to the Indiana High School Girls Basketball State Finals this weekend after winning the Warsaw Semi-State Saturday. This is Maggard’s fourth trip to the state finals as a Lady Cavalier.

Indiana high school boys basketball sectionals begin Tuesday night. Columbia City is hosting its own sectional, facing Mississinewa at 6 p.m., and Whitko travels to West Noble to take on Wawasee at 6 p.m. Churubusco drew the bye and will play the winner of Adams Central and Woodlan in the semi-finals Friday night at Woodlan. LETTER OF INTENT: Col. City’s Hinen signs with Bethel

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City High School senior Macie Hinen signed a letter of intent to attend Bethel College in Mishawaka, where she will play basketball.

Hinen was a 1st-Team All-Northeast Hoosier Conference selection this year and was named the 21 Alive Player of the Week in December after hitting the winning basket in Columbia City’s 58-57 win over Carroll.

EAGLES FALL: CC drops final tune-up before sectional

FORT WAYNE — The Columbia City Eagles’ boys’ basketball team wrapped up the regular season portion of its schedule, traveling to Concordia Lutheran for a contest with the Cadets that they hoped would establish some momentum heading into next week’s sectional action, but inconsistent play on both ends of the court cost the Eagles as they fell to the Cadets 52-46 Friday night.

“In the end, all you can say is they got it done, and we didn’t,” said Eagle Head Coach Chris Benedict.

Caden Ferguson swims the butterfly for Indian Springs Middle School’s boys swim team at South Side High School’s natatorium. Ferguson and the squad have competed in several events recently. Results were not available at press time but will be published in upcoming editions of The Post & Mail.
