Lady Eagles nab win over Wildcats

COLUMBIA CITY — With one game to go before sectional play begins, Columbia City‘s girls soccer team scored a win over Whitko Wednesday.

With a goal in each half, the Lady Eagles picked up the victory by a 2-0 margin.

Hannah Wappes put the ball in the net in the first half, assisted by Emily Ewing and Katie Peterson, and Starrla Hodson got the second half goal for Columbia City, with an assist from Sarah Wise.

Columbia City Girls Soccer Head Coach Stephanie Wiley said the victory should give the 3-11 Lady Eagles a boost going into Tuesday’s sectional opener against Huntington North.

Rongos, Baugher stay alive in boys tennis

WARSAW — Though the season wrapped up for many tennis players in Indiana Wednesday night, Whitko’s Tyler Baugher and Columbia City’s Niko Rongos are keeping their postseason hopes alive, after picking up No. 1 singles wins in the opening round of sectional action.

Though Rongos and Baugher are still in action, their teams aren’t. Rongos and Baugher picked up their team’s lone points.

Columbia City fell 4-1 to Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday and the Wildcats dropped a 4-1 match to the defending sectional champs, Warsaw.

Wildcat netters defeat Churubusco, 3-2

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys tennis team picked up a win against visiting Churubusco Monday.

The Wildcats beat the Eagles 3-2.

All three Whitko wins came in singles action. Tyler Baugher got a 6-1, 6-0 win over Luke Lillmars in No. 1 singles.

Blake Castle went the distance in a three-set, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Landon Lillmars.

Lady Eagles overwhelm ’Cats

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s volleyball team beat county-rival Whitko in three sets Monday.

The Lady Eagles won 25-13, 25-13 and 25-12.

COLUMBIA CITY — Going into sectional play tonight, Columbia City’s boys tennis team dropped a 5-0 match to Northrop Tuesday night.

Niko Rongos was handed only his second loss of the year, falling to Northrop’s Alex Stavretis, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.

Columbia City’s Blake Fearnow lost a close No. 2 singles match, falling 2-6, 6-2, 2-6.

Dillon Reed dropped a 6-0, 6-2 match in No. 3 singles.

Wildcat soccer closes out home season

SOUTH WHITLEY — The Whitko Wildcat boys soccer team closed out the home portion of its regular season schedule Tuesday night in what Head Coach Jason Ehrman described as “making it too easy” for Prairie Heights.

The end result was a 6-2 Panther win to improve to 8-6-1, while the Wildcats fell to 2-11-1.

Whitko opened up with a 1-0 lead on a Daniel Kirkham goal at the 26:38 mark, but the Panthers responded with five unanswered goals.

Lady Eagles down DeKalb

AUBURN — Columbia City’s volleyball team downed a Northeast Hoosier Conference opponent Tuesday night.

The Lady Eagles dropped DeKalb in three close games.

Columbia City won game one 25-20, but had an extra-point battle in game two, finally winning 32-30.

In another long game three, the Lady Eagles won 29-27.

Lady Eagle volleyball sweeps Angola

CHURUBUSCO — Coming off of a weekend tournament victory, Churubusco’s volleyball team was on a hot streak, and the Lady Eagles kept it rolling with a three-set victory against Angola Tuesday.

’Busco swept the Lady Hornets by a final of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-16.

With the victory, Churubusco is 13-11 for the season and 5-2 in the Northeast Corner Conference.

“It was a good win for us, coming off of the tournament victory,” said Churubusco Head Volleyball Coach Trinda Goings. “Hopefully we can keep building off of that momentum.”

Soccer tourneys set to begin next week

COLUMBIA CITY — A field of 299 boys teams, a record for the 20th consecutive year, and 258 girls teams are entered as pairings for the 20th Annual IHSAA Soccer State Tournaments were announced this week by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Boys sectional action at 64 sites — 32 in each class — will be played Monday, Oct. 7 through Saturday, Oct. 12. Sixteen regional sites — eight in each class — will host two rounds each Thursday, Oct. 17, and Saturday, Oct. 19.

Lady Eagles win South Side Tourney

FORT WAYNE — Churubusco’s volleyball team emerged victorious from the Fort Wayne South Side Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

’Busco won the championship match, 25-20, 21-25 15-13 over Norwell. In the semifinals, the Lady Eagles beat New Haven, 26-24, 25-21.

In pool play Churubusco beat South Side 25-12, 25-14 but lost to Norwell 25-17, 26-24.

After losing to Norwell in pool play, the Lady Eagles were behind once again in the third set of the title match. The Lady Knights were up 10-7, but ’Busco was able to close the gap and pull out the win.

Roush takes fourth at New Haven Invite

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City stand-out harrier Samantha Roush placed fourth out of 151 runners at the New Haven Invitational Saturday.

The Lady Eagles placed seventh out of 15 scoring teams in their division, and the boys squad took ninth, led by Gage Emrick with a 26th-place finish.

Roush’s fourth-place finish was a competitive one, as there were only 1:30 between the second and sixth runners Saturday.

Brooke Wersler was less than two minutes behind Roush and placed 23rd, followed by Natalia Johnson who finished in 50th place.
