NEAR-MISS: Wildcats fall to Rochester in title game

ROCHESTER — Two Three Rivers Conference undefeated football teams came into Friday night’s game at Rochester and only won came out the winner.

After five conference games, Whitko and Rochester stood strong at the top of the field. Friday night, in a fight for the TRC title, Rochester took a devastating win over the Wildcats, 56-14.

ON TO THE FINALS: Victory over Lady Redskins 1-0

Columbia City’s girls soccer team is advancing to the sectional championship match after beating Fort Wayne North Side Thursday night. The first-round game was originally slated for Tuesday, but was postponed to Thursday due to weather. The Lady Eagles beat the Lady Redskins 1-0, with Columbia City’s goal coming from Hannah Wappes (pictured). The sectional final game will be held tonight at Homestead at 5 p.m.

WARNER SETS SCHOOL RECORD: Lady Wildcats start strong; fall to T. Valley

SOUTH WHITLEY — The Lady Wildcats fought a hard match against conference rivals Tippecanoe Valley High School Wednesday, falling 3-1. Whitko started the first set strong showing off the gains in communication and fundamentals that it has been developing over the season.

’CATS SEEK TITLE: Rochester, Whitko both undefeated in the TRC

ROCHESTER — Five weeks of Three Rivers Conference football have passed and, for five weeks, Whitko and Rochester are without a loss. Both teams can’t come out the victor this Friday night, however, when the Wildcats travel to Rochester, seeking the conference title.

'COL. CITY 'STANDOUT': Coverstone signs with Huntington University

HUNTINGTON — Huntington University’s men’s basketball program is adding another Whitley County product to its roster with the signing of Columbia City High School standout Mason Coverstone. Coverstone, the 6-foot-5 forward, has established himself as one of the best sharpshooters in the area, having tallied 94 3-pointers at a clip of 45.9 percent over the last two seasons. Coverstone has been a two-year starter for the Eagles.

SECTIONAL OPENER: Homestead ends Eagles’ season

FORT WAYNE — Over the years, the Homestead Spartan boys soccer team has had Columbia City’s number, pinning a regular series of seven- or eight-goal shutouts on the Eagles. No one expected any different outcome when the Eagles and Spartans squared off on Homestead’s field in the opening contest of the 2014 IHSAA Sectional.

SEASON SEWN SHUT: Whitko girls drop opener

FORT WAYNE — Whitko’s girls soccer season came to a close Monday night after a close loss to South Adams in the sectional opener at Blackhawk Christian High School in Fort Wayne. Despite a 16-shot attack on South Adams’ goal, the Lady Eagles managed just a lone goal in the second half, falling 2-1.

FIRST HALF DEFICIT TOO MUCH: East Noble gets best of Eagles

KENDALLVILLE — The challenge for the Columbia City Eagle football team has remained the same for the last several weeks — to put together two complete halves of football. Friday night’s contest at East Noble proved to be the same challenge, as the Eagles fell behind 49-0 in the first half before coming back to put up 35 unanswered points against the Knights, while holding the hosts to 54 net yards in the second half.

RUNNERS RESCHEDULE AT NORTHROP: Harriers battle the elements, NHC

FORT WAYNE — Rain, sleet, mud and brutally cold wind — the only thing missing from Saturday’s Northeast Hoosier Conference cross country meet was a plague of locusts. The meet, which had been moved from its original location of The Plex to Northrop High School due to flooding, dawned to some of the worst weather conditions of the season.
