Toughness gets ’Busco back on top of NECC conference

   CHURUBUSCO — “We played tough,” ’Busco head coach Lee Etzler said as he addressed his team in postgame comments. “We need to play tough again next week.” With those comments Etzler both summed up Friday night’s 45-28 Northeast Corner Conference title clinching win over the visiting Lakeland Lakers, and set the tone for next week’s opening round of the IHSAA sectionals.
   The Eagles clinched their second consecutive share of the NECC crown, dropping the Lakers for the second year in a row.

Whitko locks up outright TRC title over Valley 21-14

   AKRON — Whitko continued its shock and awe for the season on Friday night clinching its first solo Three Rivers Conference title in the last 20 years.
   In a close battle against TRC powerhouse Tippicanoe Valley, the Wildcats carried the honor of Coach Wayne Swender’s Indianapolis Colts Coach of the Week award to a 21-14 victory.
   After the game, as the players chanted, “Coach of the Week,” Swender broke into the huddle interrupting his team, “No, no, no, it’s team of the week!”

Dwenger’s bid for title bumps City

   FORT WAYNE — The end of a high school career comes for every senior.
   The end came Thursday night for eight Columbia City girls’ soccer members.
   After winning a definitive sectional opener over FW North Side 12-0, the Lady Eagles took on the tough task of playing another Fort Wayne team in the semifinal round, No. 8 Bishop Dwenger.
   Led by Division I recruit Sarah Killion’s four goals, the Lady Saints beat Columbia City 5-0, advancing to the sectional championship versus Homestead Saturday.

Postseason tickets see hike

   When the postseason opens up for Indiana high school football next week, the fans will need an extra buck at the ticket booth.
   Tickets for the sectional round had a one dollar hike from the regular $5 cost from seasons prior. The new cost was determined by the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA).
   Fans don’t have to worry about buying tickets early. Tickets will be sold both in athletic offices during school hours and at the entrances on game night.

Colts honor Whitko coach

   SOUTH WHITLEY — The Whitko football team’s first Three Rivers Conference championship since 2002 came with an extra trophy Monday.
   After a 27-24 overtime victory on the road at Rochester, the Wildcats not only locked up a share of the TRC title but had its head coach recognized by Indianapolis Colts for its accomplishments.
   Third-year coach Wayne Swender was selected as the Colts/NFL Coach of the Week for week eight of the Indiana high school football season.

Gridiron Preview: Week Nine

   The final week of the regular season has all three Whitley County teams vying for a conference title. No. 8 Columbia City travels to Norwell for a shot at its first NHC title since 1990. Whitko can lock up an outright title in the TRC at Tippecanoe Valley. No. 5 Churubusco is going for its second consecutive NECC title against Lakeland at home.

City digs for cure, falls to Pats

   On a night when the Lady Eagles donned pink shirts to show their support for finding a cure for cancer on “Dig For A Cure” night, it was the Heritage Lady Patriots who left Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium with a   victory, taking a hard-fought five-game win over the Lady Eagles.
   After dropping the first game 20-25, the Lady Eagles came back to take the next two games 25-17 and 28-26 and had built a 7-2 lead in game four before falling 19-25. The Lady Eagles dropped the deciding fifth game by a 10-15 count to fall in the match 2-3.

Menzie, Mize lead Whitko in school’s first sectional title

   MARION — When it comes to high school cross country, Whitko boys’ cross country came into Tuesday in a new position.
   A favorite.
   One season removed from reaching semistate as a team for the first time in school history, the Wildcats yet again knocked on the door of history.
   Before the Marion sectional Tuesday, Whitko had never before seen a sectional team championship.

Lady Eagles soar to top spot

   MARION — 1-2-5-7-9-13. No those aren’t lottery numbers.
   Those are the placings of Lady Eagles in Tuesday’s Marion sectional. Out of a possible fewest points of 15 as a team, No. 17 Columbia City scored 24 on its way to the first sectional championship since 1986.

   FORT WAYNE — The old saying goes, “When it rains, it pours.”
   In the opening round of the Homestead girls’ soccer sectional, it was the Columbia City Lady Eagles that “rained” goal after goal on the North Side Lady Redskins on their way to a resounding 12-0 win Tuesday night.
