HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Hoops conference schedules heat up

January 9, 2015

WHITLEY COUNTY — High school basketball teams are getting into the heart of the conference seasons this month, and several squads are already off to a strong start.

Churubusco’s boys are 3-0 in the 12-team Northeast Corner Conference, with wins over Westview, West Noble and Prairie Heights.

The Eagles are scheduled to host Fremont tonight, weather permitting, before going into the NECC tourney next week.

NHC WIN: Eagle wrestlers grab over E. Noble, 40-29

January 8, 2015

KENDALLVILLE — The number of bouts won was close — 8 to 6. But when the Columbia City wrestlers won bouts, they won big, and when they lost bouts, they lost small. That proved to be the difference as The Eagles downed the East Noble Knights 40-29 in Northeast Hoosier Conference competition, Wednesday night.

Columbia City’s Cross Dietrich started things off right for the Eagles at 152 pounds. The Columbia City junior scored a third period takedown to push his win into a 14-6 major decision, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead to start the match.

BOYS BASKETBALL: ’Busco defeats Woodlan

January 8, 2015

CHURUBUSCO — In Churubusco’s boys basketball team’s first game back from break, the Eagles hosted and defeated Woodlan in a lopsided contest, 73-42.

“I thought tonight was a game we needed to create a fast pace,” said ’Busco Head Coach Michael McBride. “We were much more consistent tonight.”

The first quarter was not unlike others the Eagles have played this year. The team went through spurts where it looked like they might pull away quickly. But the Warriors stayed close and hung around and the Eagles were only up three points after the first eight minutes.

HAZEN LEADS: Eagles win 62-50

January 8, 2015

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia CIty’s boys basketball team improved to 8-3 Wednesday night, thanks to a stellar performance by junior Brachen Hazen.

Hazen scored 29 points and collected 14 rebounds in the Eagles’ 62-50 victory over Garrett.

Hazen and senior Mason Coverstone began the first quarter to combine for 12 of the Eagles’ 16 points.

EAGLES WIN: Fairfield downed in conference match, 42-36

January 7, 2015

CHURUBUSCO — A few short days after their fifth place finish at the IHSWCA Team State Tournament, the Churubusco Eagle wrestlers played host to Northeast Corner Conference foe, the Fairfield Falcons. The Eagles got wins when they needed them and pins from the wrestlers that they expected to do well in downing a tough Falcon squad 42-36 Tuesday night.

WHITKO VICTORY: Lady ’Cats take 39-30 win over Fairfield

January 7, 2015

SOUTH WHITLEY — There are five goals written on the locker room door for the Whitko Lady Wildcats. In the first half against Fairfield Tuesday night goal number 3, “Create Energy,” was missing. Whitko picked up it’s energy after half time and in doing so picked up a win.

The Lady Wildcats smothered Fairfield defensively in the second half and pulled away late for a 39-30 win. The first half was a struggle for Whitko in nearly every facet of the game.

'BUSCO DOWN: Col. City girls win, 65-26

January 7, 2015

Pro Football Playoff Previews and Predictions

This coming weekend's matchups:

Dallas @ Green Bay
What to watch for:
Dallas will travel to Green Bay to face Aaron Rodgers and their dynamic offense. Green Bay has not lost at Lambeau Field yet this year. Dallas matches up well with Green Bay because they have a strong running game that can keep the clock running and keep the ball out of Green Bay’s hands. The weather might get the best out of Dallas as it is likely to be extremely cold. Green Bay’s offense will be looking to feast on a weak Dallas secondary.
