Controversial winning shot lifts City over Whitko

   COLUMBIA CITY — It wasn’t the 15 lead changes, the quick 10-2 start by Columbia City or even the game-high 22 points by Whitko’s Logan Irwin that was on everyone’s mind after exiting Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium Wednesday night.
   Everyone asked the question at least once. Was it a two or three?

Tough defense gets City win on the road

   LEO — Offense is always necessary to win any sport but defense can win you plenty as well.
   Tuesday night, Columbia City girls’ basketball began its first winning streak after hitting the road to Leo.    The Lady Eagles (3-1) used a stifling defensive press to win their second consecutive game beating the Lady Lions 42-22.

No. 10 Braves open Culp era with loss

   COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City wrestling team opened a new season Tuesday night.
   The match was also the first for new head coach Blane Culp. In the first of only two home matches this season the young Eagle team faced off against a veteran Bellmont squad with the CCHS wrestling alumnae in attendance.
   The Eagles managed only a forfeit win against the always tough Braves in the varsity match falling by a 73-6 score.

   A final look back on the Indiana high school football season sees a combined 30-6 record for Whitley County go down as easily the best ever for three area high school squads.
   The last part of that exciting season ended Friday night in the semistate round but not without plenty of history made by Churubusco in 2010.

City giant in return home

   COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagle basketball team finished both halves against the Marion Lady Giants with strong inside play. The Lady Eagles out scored the visitors 44-27 in the second and fourth quarters to take a 65-50 win Saturday night.
   After a close first quarter that went back and forth the Eagles finally took the lead 9-6 on an inside basket by senior Corinna Raypole. A basket from the right wing by junior Samara Qureshi gave Columbia City an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Elkhart M. deals ’Cats lopsided loss

   ELKHART — It’s been a roller coaster start to the season for Whitko girls’ basketball just four games into schedule.
   Two wins under their belt, the Lady Wildcats have had tough competition follow up each win.
   After a home opening win, Whitko fell to Columbia City. Following a county victory over Churubusco last week, a long road trip to Elkhart Memorial finished with a lopsided loss to the Lady Chargers 79-33.

SEMI-SHOCKED: ’Busco’s record 2010 season ends in semi-state loss

   LAFAYETTE —  Only four teams remained in Class A Indiana high school football heading into Friday night.
   For the second time in four seasons, Churubusco was one of those teams. Between the Eagles and their second state finals appearance in school history was the best Class A had to offer in defending champion Lafayette Central Catholic.

Speed vs. speed in class A semistate

   It’s speed that has gotten both Churubusco (12-1) and No. 1 Lafayette Central Catholic (13-0) to be one of the last four teams remaining in class A high school football in Indiana.
   Friday night, the speed of two teams ranking in the top 10 all season will come together for a chance at a state finals appearance.

Tough Snider squad hands CC first loss

   FORT WAYNE — Tuesday was a daunting task for the Columbia City (1-1) girls’ basketball team as the road part of their schedule started.
   Only days after opening the regular season with a win over Whitko, the Lady Eagles hit the road to Snider (3-0) where the Lady Panthers averaged 79 in their first two games of the season.
