Wildcats take final TRC win of season

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls basketball team picked up its last Three Rivers Conference win of the season Friday night, topping Northfield 50-46 Friday night.

After a back-and-forth battle between the rivals, Whitko pulled out on top in the final minutes, forcing Northfield to foul, and scoring 5-of-7 from the charity stripe to take the win.

In a low-scoring first quarter, the Wildcats pulled ahead with a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Brianna Cumberland to make the score 8-6.

Eagles drop tight contest to Lakers

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s boys basketball team failed to make it two wins in three games when it fell to Lakeland Friday.

The Eagles had defeated Central Noble last week, then fell on the road to Angola Monday. Friday, ’Busco was edged out at home 48-44 by the visiting Lakers.

The Eagles now hold a 2-12 record and are 2-4 in the NECC.

It was a tight contest that was tied at halftime, 19-19. Churubusco had a shot at the end to tie, but missed, and left Lakeland to shoot free throws.

Frosh Eagles fall to Bulldogs

COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Eagles freshman boys basketball team was handed their second loss of the season when they played the New Haven Bulldogs Friday night.

It seems the ball just wouldn’t go in the basket for the Eagles.
At the end of the first half, the Bulldogs were ahead 17-12, but the Eagles couldn’t catch up by the end of the game with the score ending in 39-20 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The loss makes their record 10-2.

Angola sweeps ’Busco in doubleheader

ANGOLA — Churubusco’s basketball squads both lost in a doubleheader at Angola Monday.

The boys lost 64-52, and the girls team was defeated 55-38, in a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was moved up to Monday due to concerns over potential adverse weather.

In the boys game, the Eagles fell behind by 10 points after one quarter, 17-7. Churubusco closed the gap by six in the second to make the halftime margin 25-21 in favor of the host Hornets.

Eagles fall to New Haven

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City's boys basketball team fell in a competitive Northeast Hoosier Conference game Friday, 48-35.

The Eagles were led in scoring by Brachen Hazen with 16 points.

Eagle freshmen win tournament

January 27, 2014

WATERLOO — Columbia City’s boys basketball C-Team won a holiday tournament Dec. 30.

The Eagles defeated DeKalb in the opener, 44-24, and defeated Homestead in the finals, 39-36.

Against DeKalb, Rob Wood led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points. Brock Snouffer had 13, Noah Wigent 10, Brendon Slagal scored three, David Osborn had two and Jordan Bechtold had one point.

Eagle grapplers drop final home dual

COLUMBIA CITY — Thursday night the Columbia City Eagle wrestlers played host to Northeast Hoosier Conference foe,East Noble.

In a match rescheduled due to weather, the Eagles squared off against a veteran East Noble squad that boasted four state qualifiers.

The Eagles dropped eight of the first nine matches, but finished strong with five straight wins. Despite the rally, the Eagles fell by a 39-28 score.

Col. City boys lose to Vikings

January 24, 2014

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys basketball team lost to neighboring Huntington North Thursday.

The Eagles traveled across the southern border of Whitley County and fell in a road contest, 48-39, to the host Vikings.

With the loss, Columbia City falls to 6-7 on the season. Huntington North is 8-6 overall.

There were three lead changes in the game, but Huntington North was in control by the end of the first quarter at 14-9.
